LCDs CRTs and LSD!

    So I'm curious about your monitors. I'm guessing that because many of you are gamers, you still use CRT monitor, am I right?

    But I bet some use LCDs mainly because they are cheap and recently they can handle gaming quite good. So I'm curious about what kind of monitor you have, would you buy a LCD or if you have one, how is it in gaming and your personal toughts about LCDs in general.

    I have been looking at the Dell UltraSharp 2005FPW 20" Widescreen monitor and it would suite me quite well since I'm a graphic designer and I need big screen (or rather I have gotten uset to one at work) with lots of workspace. And the screen is cheap but is has only 12ms response time and the brightness isn't that hot at 300cd/m2. I could go with some 19" LCD and if they are cheap enough, I could get two of them which would be heaven.

    But, now it's time for your opinions.

    I use an Ilyama ProLite E435S LCD.

    I'd never got back to CRT. The image on this is sharper, brighter and easier on the eyes than anything a CRT could produce.

    Oh, and 'only 12ms response time'? I don't know where you got the idea that such a rate wasn't sufficient for gaming - mine runs at 16ms and there's no ghosting, lag or any other negative visual artifacts whatsoever.

    I have two CRTs hooked up to this bad boy

    One 17 inch HKC, and one 17 inch CTX. I prefer these, the color just seems to be richer and there is no chance of ghosting. I went around looking for LCDs, but i was hard pressed to find one that didnt noticably ghost my games for a reasonable price. These 17s only cost me about $100 a piece and i think i get better color and quality than a 3$00 17 inch LCD.

    The response times vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, when reading some Thom's Hardware tests it shows that sometimes 16ms and even 12ms response times are in reality 20ms and others go for safe than sorry and note 20ms when their display is actually 12ms.

    And nowdays I think they even use new way to measure the response time with GtG (gray to gray) rather than BtB (black to black) which is more realistic in real life use than the BtB.

    kleiney, if you are here for the LSD you are way too late, it's all gone.

    i had an lcd a few years ago and while it was nice how small it was and that i could tur it sideways for what ever random reason, it could only go up to 1024x768, and it didn't have many colors; on many forums there is a subtle difference between post background color, i could never see that on an lcd. so i use a nice crt now and i can see everything fine and dand at 1600x1200, awesome high res with tons of colors, it does take up the majority of my desk, which is fine with a kb but when i add a joystick it hangs over the edge.

    all and all i like crt better, who cares about size if it's not an issue, i have my lcd sitting around, i used it once again when i went to my cousins house so we could lan

    I wish I had the cash for a good LCD. Thanks to my desk layout/size, having a massive CRT on it is a real pain in the arse. It's also kind of blinding at times, and the flickering that lower refresh rates cause is a bastard (but necessary for some games). It also attracts glare like a mofo, the colours seem to bleed into each other because of the whole glass thing, and Jesus Christ.

    50 inch sony HDTV for a monitor here, resolution is...1280x720

    the thing was abour 4 thousand dollars and had to buy a 70 dollar cable but yes, i think it was worth it.

    IMO the only reason not to buy a (well-made) LCD display these days is price. And that is coming down. One of my samsungs is like 25ms and I have absolutely no qualms gaming on it, I see no ghosting or lag or whatever. I think it's just ridiculous to throw numbers around without experiencing a monitor firsthand.

    I haven't had an eye strain headache since I switched to TFT. I'll never buy another CRT.

    they've gotten a lot better since your old one but really, if you're going to get one get a good one not a cheap one. if you're worried about cost suffer through a good CRT; if you want something *nice* get a good LCD :]

    The last place I worked I had two 19" Samsung syncmaster 959NF CRT monitors and I loved them to hell and back. Also at school we had the 19" Eizos (several different models but all pro quality).

    So I got love for CRT monitors, but I'd love to go for LCD monitor.

    It's hard, since I need resolution around 1600x1200 or even higher when I'm working in Photoshop, and most 19" have native resolution of 1280x1024 but which is perfect for gaming.

    Tho most new games support widescreen gaming and there is always the possibility of playing in a window, something I mostly do when I'm playing a MMORPG.
