    I'm going to join in with ReNo.

    There's a 3D artist position thats opened up in my area, and I'm working on a website to show off my work. Using the link that kleinluka gave last week. I tired to make everything load fast and show graphics and wireframes. Only the level design sections work at the moment.

    I'm working on it all day, so i'll let you know whats new as far as updates.

    too much clicking!

    I'm going to redo my site and make it very much... a 1 page thing like a resume.

    None of the links work except one. Thumbnails don't work yet.

    The mainpage is just a "welcome" site and pretty much pointless. You could already have art on there and spare the visitor an extra click. Make sure you put that little footnote with your name and e-mail on every subpage. Indicate what job you are looking for. This needs to be very clear.

    For in-game pictures or scene renders where you did SOME work but not ALL of it, indicate clearly which art pieces on the pictures were made by you and give credit to the other people whose work you are displaying.

    von*ferret: I like that idea of the 1 page resume.

    kleinluka: Nothing works yet, im still building it Re-working it again, from your points. Should I keep the thumbnails at 400x300 or drop them lower?

    as far as the ingame shots, all artwork is by me, the level designer placed them in the level. So, i'll include him also.

    they are 320x240 right now. make sure the full-size ones are at least 800x600.

    also, when i go in level design section and click on the duck-hunting game it opens a new window. don't do that. keep everything in one window (except for clicking thumbnails).

    does anyone know how to code it so that when you click a thumbnail a window opens up the size of the picture and you can click the picture to close the window? Seems like a good way to to do it to me

    Heres a simple java script I found to do the image popup windows.

    This part goes in above your <body> tag and below your tag.

    Code
    <script language=javascript>

    </script>

    And here is how you link the images (I used one of your images as an example) to the script:

    Code
    [img=level/duckhunting/stuttgart_03.jpg]

    [/code]I hope it helps you, I found it on one of my old websites.

    website changed. Less clicking, quick view of artwork. I still have to link the thumbnails, but everything loads quick and is easy to navigate. Some links are still work-in-progress.

    von*ferret: hehe thanks. Someone over at polycount said it didn't fit with my other work, unless he was in a level. So he will return in a UT2004 level

    Changes:

    Removed the BLOG page

    I kept the tutorials page because there are very few detailed tutorial for using the Torque engine, especially with pictures.

    Game Art section has been scaled back. Dragon is gone, but he will be making an appearence in my UT2004 level soon. hehe. I also made the tank page show alot bigger pictures and some render with and without normal mapping. This section looks a little bare.

    The Environment art page got redone, instead of clicking all those screenshots, I now have 1 montage image, that you can click to goto all the screenshots. Saves the visitor from constantly clicking.

    Contract work also got revamped, with descriptions for each of the pieces of work.

    Tested the site in IE and Firefox and everything seems to be ok. Let me know what you think.

    I think you should have the links open in the same window rather than a new one. If you do want to keep it as a popup, try that javascript code Kreigore gave to make it a bare window with only the content, and shape it so it only uses the amount of space necessary, a la snarkpit's screenshot stuff (click a thumbnail and you'll see)...

    the picture with your tank..i cant see much of a different between normal mapped and non-normal mapped version. the tank is very dark and rendered on a bright background :X

    ReNo: yeah i thought about using it, except im using dreamweaver and editing code is something im not VERY good at. I'll ask my friend tomorow.

    kleinluka: You cannot. Hmmmm I need to make this work somehow. Maybe if i do a render using a grey tank color on a black background with on and off normal map.

    For the love of God, don't use any kind of javascript that resizes your users' windows for them. There's nothing more infuriating than using Firefox in one-window mode, only for a popup to resize the entire window, affecting all of the tabs/sites open at the time. I've had to outright stop using GameSpot's image galleries because of their recent adoption of this technique.

    You'd think there are enough websites out there that use popup windows (I'm not talking popup ad's here - INTENTIONAL popups clicked by the user) to justify NOT using FF in one window mode I actually didn't know such a mode existed to be honest, but I can certainly see why popups would get annoying in your scenario. Is there any real benefit to using this mode? Why not just open everything in tabs intentionally and if something has to use another window, so be it?

    Actually, Snarkpit, GameSpot and several portfolio sites are the only ones that I've seen do this -- and I get around a lot of sites. Other sites don't aggressively force the window sizing, meaning that it can sit neatly in an extra tab. It's a nice idea to have sites/pages launch in popups, but most people just find them annoying and prefer screenshots to open up in standard pages so that they can divert into a new tab (middle-click) or open in the current as they see fit.

    The reason that I (and many others) use this mode is because it keeps all internet browsing in one window. It makes it 100% impossible for a pop-up ad to ever bother me, since even if one does appear it's simply diverted into a tab in the background rather than a new window.

    One key to web design is to never, ever assume that a user will have a particular setup. You need to make your site 100% scalable to whatever browsing configuration a user has (unless it's unreasonable stuff like an outdated and yet readily-updatable browser), otherwise you risk pissing off that visitor and never seeing them again -- definitely not the kind of thing that you want on a portfolio!

    In fact, even automatically opening new windows for users via use of a _blank target is looked down upon, and XHTML (which is ultimately set to replace HTML) doesn't even support that particular functionality. The reason? Users can choose to open things in new windows if they want to. Although a user can force a link to open in the same tab even if it's a _blank link by dragging the link onto the tab or address bar, it should work the other way around -- they should decide whether or not it opens in a new window in the first place. It's all about promoting user control, you see.

    but when does user control become a garbled heap of integration?
