So whether painting skins or texturse, when you hand paint them I find that they look rather cartoony. Any suggestions on how to get away from that without simply photo ripping? Like overlays or something?

overlays work along with different blending modes. only problem I find is that creating the overlay to use for the blend mode takes more time than to just photo manip it. But maybe I'm just not understanding what you mean.

Be careful with dark outlines if you dont want it to be cartoonish.
Also try not to make stuff look too perfect.
That'd be my advise anyway
