I decided to make a thread with my dumb modeling questions.

    Dumb modeling question number one-

OK, i made a box texture thats 128x64 pixels. My model demensions for the side i applied the texture to are 128x64. However, when i apply the texture to the poly, i just get this

    UVW Map modifier = <3

    in english:

apply a UVW mapping modifier to your model. Right now it doesn't have any mapping coordinates so it doesn't know how to apply the texture onto the mesh.

After that apply a UVW Unwrap modifier and go into edit mode if you want to do further more detailed changes

also you need to click the little button in your material browser to display it in the viewport.

I've a basic question of my own - editable mesh or editable poly? I dunno which I should be using, so does it make any noticeable difference?

I prefer editable poly, it keeps the model cleaner while you're working on it, less confusing

mike-0, I don't think so, you'll probably have to export to md3 (Q3 format) then convert in milkshape :/

Props for not wanting to pirate anything btw

Try changing video driver. If your not using it already I'd reccomend DirectX, if you are already try something different.

Customize - Prefrences - Viewports - Choose Driver - Restart Max

Seems like that you have had some of the same problems as me:) Dunno why you have to apply an UWV Map modifier in Gmax as it works fine without it in 3dsmax.

I would also very much like to hear how I get my gmax model into something I can place in my Source map. Currently my gmax can only export to some wierd format called Plasma:/

I have tried asking in Cannonfooders forum and got this sad response:

    http://www.chaosincarnate.net/bbs/viewtopic.php?t=150

And btw. can 3dsmax open gmax files?

I'll ask my own dumb question here because i don't want to create a new thread just because of this.

So, i'm learning uvw mapping and i have a problem. I added Unwrap UVW modifier and been playing around with it for a moment. I'm following a tutorial which tells me to use Tools -> Stitch selected -command for the smaller parts in my uvw (or what it is, don't know the terms very well yet). That connects the small random parts into the bigger parts to make the skinning alot easier of course. The problem is that when i use the Stitch selected -command it turns the whole object about 45 degrees and it disturbs me because i'm skinning a knife and there's 2 blades against each other so it's nice to skin them, but when using Stitch selected command the other blade turns that 45 degrees. Should i just turn it back so it's something near the original position or is there a way to align it perfectly like it was before using the Stitch selected -command?

EDIT: Another question, knife has 2 sides which are identical, like a mirror. Is it somehow possible to have the skin mirrored to the other side so i could use smaller texture or otherwise to have more detail with same sized texture?

    EDIT2: I think i got it already..
