It might be too early to be talking about anything related to this project, but I want to ask if there are some loving for the type of thing I'm doing.

Anyone played Gloom? A Modification for Quake 2, it is THE mod I feel is best mod ever made, it was one of the first mods to really kick mods up a notch, make something truely unique and impressive, but back then, mods were way more innovative than todays CS clone shooter #1 and it's side kicks.

From Gloom to Natural Selection, many people say that NS is a copy of Gloom but I don't think so, and rather, I do not care if it is, it is a great mod in it's own right, of HL mods NS is the best one by far.

You might ask how these two modifications have anything to do with me and my lil project, well, I'm designing a mod like that, but it is still in it's starting line, I haven't actually decided which game to use, I'm still trying to compare the options I have. Obviously the project is very large, but babysteps gets it done, as of currently the core team is two people and I intend to keep my core team very small before later when there is actually a mod to work on if you guys know what I'm saying.

I got a long design document already and I'm pretty much ready to start working on the graphics, but still the engine is the biggest grief, so I'm asking you, which game you think we should go for? The current options could be HL2 and UT2k4, but I'm not counting out FarCry, BF2 and Doom3, not yet anyway.

So give input. I'll provide the output

I remember Gloom, my friend played it alot and I didn't understand a single piece of that game, anyway...

You guys should design the game for platform that gets attention, Half-Life 2. There are no good reasons to start this multiplayer modification for FarCry, no one will play it... On HL2, you have a GREAT player base waiting for your modification...

Yeah a thing I have been wrestling for a while now, since this mod has been in my mind for several years already, I want to have as much coverage for the game BUT I don't want to make it by sacrifising some elemets of gameplay because of the engine, tho I still do't know what kind of restrictions HL2 or any other engine would posess on a project like ours since there are so many unique elements, but it would be best to go with the most popular ones (HL2 and UT2k4, I'm intriqued by BF2 but I am not so sure if the players are interested in what I offer since BF is notorious for it's players being bit "picky").

Also one thing that is a big plus for HL2 is that there are alot of great mappers that could do contribution for our mod, since I'm not sure if I want to get a full time mapper for the team, we are trying to make few maps for example about the style we are looking the maps to be and then take in contributions, just like how many mods do it these days.

BUT there are one thing I'm concerned, NS is HL mod and they are making a Source version as we speak, so it is definedly going to be a big competitor for us, and I have alot of respect for the NS team so I don't think we are up to compete with NS for a Aliens vs. Humans "segment", but maybe we just have to offer people something else, something that doesn't step on toes of NS.

I did not know this mod before, but I just surfed a little to find some info about it. I must say this sounds A LOT like NS. Damn, I thought they had invented it all by themselfs in NS...

Anyways, Gloom sounds really cool so if you can make a mod like then then I think you got a pretty good mod. There are however a lot of other guys who are doing the same for Source. The NS team of course does it, but so do many others.

I think that you have a very good chance if you make it a mod for FarCry or UT2k4. Doom3 probably got too many marines vs. aliens already.

I know there are lods of mod teams making their own variations of NS or similar to HL2, and Team Reaction making next Gloom for Doom3 it is a tight spot to fit, but I have played these kinds of games for long and I'm pretty confident we can offer something that no other MOD does. I'm trying to think everything as professionally as I can, since I'm trying to land a job on game development some day and especially as a some kind of designer since I feel that I got some pretty good ideas (this is ofcourse my own opinion and not neccessarily a fact).

Currently my co "worker" is fond of UT2k4 and he has spent alot of time there, so it might be the way to go since they don't have anything like this as far as I know.

Did the Quake 2 mod have anything to do with the original "Gloom" for the Amiga? It was basically just a Doom clone.

No I don't think so, haven't heard anything like that ever. But there is always a possibility of a chance

Alien Swarm is more about Co-op and squad stuff. But yeah, the marines vs. bugs is there. They are coming to Source too btw. - even also with a commercial product.

Yeah well I can assure you that Gloom, NS and what we are doing are two completely different game styles. And the only matching thing would be the superficial scifi setting and aliens vs. humans.

Aha. What I like about NS was not the aliens vs. marines, but rather all the other stuff. Anyways, good to hear that you got some new stuff:)

Btw. for SoW2 we are actually doing it the other way around. There is no aliens vs. marines, but the the gameplay is pretty similar.

Oh sweet, I'll be a fan of your mod since no matter the setting, I love the NS type of gameplay, it is so refreshing after these mindless run there gun there CS gameplay try outs.
