VIDEO GAME DEVELOPER INSOMNIAC GAMES RANKED THIRD AMONG TOP 50 BEST COMPANIES TO WORK FOR IN AMERICAhttp://www.insomniacgames.com/

"Ratchet & Clank® Creators Become First Video Game Company Named to Annual "Best Small & Medium Companies to Work for in America" List."

BURBANK, Calif. (JUNE 20, 2005, 10:15 a.m. PST): Proving that making video games can be just as enjoyable as playing them, Insomniac Games today became the first video game company named to the "50 Best Small & Medium Sized Companies to Work for in America" list. The list was announced before an audience of 12,000 at the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM) 57th Annual Conference & Exposition in San Diego.

Insomniac Games, an independent console video game developer with 145 employees, was included in the top 25 small companies list. The company ranked third. This is the second year of the list, which ranks the top 25 small and top 25 medium companies in America that have used smart people management strategies to develop successful organizations with highly productive and satisfied workforces.

The winning organizations, which range in size from 50 to 999 employees, were announced by SHRM – the world's largest association devoted to human resource management – and selected and ranked by the Great Place to Work® Institute (GPTW). The results were based on a randomly distributed employee opinion survey. Each company evaluated was given a score based on employees' responses to a detailed questionnaire about the organizations' workplace cultures. Company programs and practices were also taken into account.

"It's a real honor to be included among the 25 best small companies to work for in America because the ranking is based on our own employees' attitudes about Insomniac Games," said Ted Price, founder and president of Insomniac Games. "This reaffirms that the collaborative approach we’ve taken over the years works. It's the suggestions that people at Insomniac make and the pride they have in the company that have allowed us to maintain the same 'small company culture' we established 11 years ago."

In addition to being the first video game company listed on the "50 Best Small & Medium Sized Companies to Work for in America" list, Insomniac Games is also the first North American video game developer to be honored in any ranking compiled by GPTW. The organization is perhaps best known for producing Fortune magazine’s annual "100 Best Companies to Work for®" list, which ranks companies with more than 1,000 employees. Two video game publishers have made GPTW's "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" list since it was first published in 1984.

Insomniac Games is best known for creating the multi-million unit selling Ratchet & Clank® and Spyro the Dragon™ franchises for the PlayStation® game console and PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system. The company is currently developing Ratchet: Deadlocked™ for Fall 2005 release on PlayStation 2.

Now that is great for Insomniac, I'm not that sure but I think I read somewhere that Adobe was number one on the big corporations list.

I hope they don't change their ways in the future.

Yeah well I have heard that in US you have to have organizations doing this kind of survey because of too many workers misconduct cases, like the one at EA. I guess that the big IT flop was pretty bad there and alot of people were left unemployed so they went to work under any circumstances, and the worker abuse was created.

So I don't think that they have that many surveys here in scandinavia.

i heard about some company that made games for mobile phones, i think in Norway or Sweden. Anyway at first they got mad sponsoring because they promised all kinds of things and had good PR so they got mega deals with hollywood and stuff, but then they started wasting all this money, running around the offices naked, having orgies and going to sexclubs and prostitutes and they were bankrupted. Im not exaggerating btw

Yes, but please don't quote your dreams as facts in the future.

    Lol, typical RD-style story:D

Back on topic it is good to see a game dev company in the list. Game design does not exactly have the reputation to be a good place to work...

Heard about this from Duncan "Finger" Moore, who started working for Insomniac about a year or so ago. He said it couldn't be more true and that its a wonderful place to work, particularly as his first industry job to get working on such a big series as Ratchet and Clank.

First time I've ever heard the Spyro games described like that. What exactly gave the spyro games more soul than other 32-bit+ generation games?

spyro was like crash bandicoot, cept with a dragon.

Yeah, and I totally see how that gives it soul I did play demos of the Spyro games and they didn't seem particularly bad or anything, but I wouldn't even have imagined somebody describing them as one of the few 32bit games that had a "soul"

Only because people let themselves believe it has to be the EA model.

Props to Insomniac, I really respect those guys and what they've done over the years... eager to see how I-8 turns out and hope to see them branch into some other genres.

The company was called Riot entertainment. It had secured rights for LOTR games, marvel comics games (like spiderman etc) and sum others and got lotsa money from big companies. Then it ruined itself while its employees were having orgies in their office sauna. I saw the documentary 'riot on' about it last year

    TRAILER>

    http://www.rioton.net/rioton/WinTraileriMed.wmv

An AWESUM company to have worked for.

"The documentary Riot On! shows what happens to a bunch of nobodies from Finland who believe

they will become billionaires by creating a company with 20 million dollars invested in them

by corporate giants like Nokia, News Corporation and the Bush & Bin Laden families driven

Carlyle. The story pivots around two people: Jan Wellmann, the charismatic Messiah and main

man behind the smoke and mirrors of the shortlived Riot Entertainment Ltd, and John Hakalax,

his initially fanatic and passionate disciple who finally breaks down under the burden of lies

to become a betraying all telling Judas"

"Riot Entertainment managed to create a very positive public image. It seemed as if it had everything going for it: Investors with very deep pockets, relationships with top media brands of the world, contracts with large operators and a very dynamic public image and worldwide presence.

The company employed 49 persons in its final days, but on the way up it opened offices in London, Berlin, Paris, Rome, Singapore, and Los Angeles, and had a staff of nearly 100. The parties arranged at its impressive Helsinki headquarters achieved an almost legendary reputation during the heady days when mobile telecoms were seen as the next wave and Finland was recognised internationally as the place to find the best surf.

The company remodelled a downtown Helsinki space into an exclusive three-story office with sauna and a theater for 50 people.

From the bankruptcy filing we learn that Riot-e was also true to its name and style in financial housekeeping. In the space of just 25 months, RIOT-E went through EUR 21.5 million in venture capital, in addition to a bridging loan made recently in order to stave off impending bankruptcy. The creditors are out 3.2 million euros. Hewlett-Packard and IBM did not get their leasing fees, BT Ignite ended up providing broadband services without compensation, Hertz will not be getting its car leasing fees and the landlord is missing 157,000 euros worth of rent."
