It's a consistent problem due to the sheer amount of insanity around here, that (BACK ON TOPIC) may hamper our attempts at drawing in outside talent.

They'll be petrified of the very scary posse on here.

    Perhaps.

I don't think you can really just decide to "grow" any internet community like this. Sure, you could spam a ton of advertising around, and maybe get a bunch of people to register, but 95% of them won't even re-visit the site again. The best you can really hope for in my opinion is to keep posting, and telling people who have good work on other sites to try putting thier stuff up on mapcore as well. The site will grow naturally according to how much content / quality is up that people are interested in. It's kind of like a plant, you can bury a seed and water it, and it will grow to however big your pot is, and how much sunlight it gets. The only time you really have to worry about it is when it's outgrowing it's pot and you need to put it in a bigger one.

We dont need to growWe need to create

    Start mapping you fools

Seriously though I'd just like to see more content coming out of people. There are like a post a month it seems in the Level Design WIP forum.

I think this stems somewhat from the unspoken focus on HL/HL2 and Unreal-based content. Sure, there is a Q3 or Doom3 map here on occasion, but for the most part they are ignored (or at least it would seem so). I was working on a Q3 map, which I think looks and plays terrific, but I've not posted it here simply because I know you're not looking for anything from the Q3 engine.

That could also be a reason for, what some are calling, a lack of growth for mapcore. There are still Q3, and now Doom3, mappers out there, but this simply isn't an id engine-friendly environment. Any time I make something with Q3 I go to Map-Center. When I make HL2 stuff, sometimes I come here. But when I do come here, I know it's always a hit or miss. Sometimes you get constructive crit, others it's just "ew leave".

Give some ppl frontpage access Zaph. Like mazy, that 25games collage could be FP with invitation to create ur own in the forums. His BF thread as well, actually evrything mazy posts could be FP.

I think we should simply make mazy.net our frontpage.

RD and Frie are onto something!

One step closer to world domination! \o/

But yeah I agree, it would be neat front page stuff

Good idea, then I doubt there would be any more talk about "lack of news":D

Yea I agree, that's probably the way it should work. However I wouldn't like to see "the most recent" thread or thread with "most replies", because some stuff isn't very good, maybe just controversial or off-topic, so either we should use a rate system (best rated threads go to the frontpage, downside: threads might be old by the time they make it to the fp) or admins/moderators pick the most interesting threads for the frontpage (downside: the threads still have to be "put" on the frontpage by some person).

I think the later method is the best though, it ensures quality and it's no big deal to click 2 buttons to display it on the fp when you read the forums anyway.

Maybe narrow the threads posted on the front down to just the gallery forums? After all, is it really necessary that off-topic and general discussion topics be displayed on the front page of a game design site?

keeping the front page more focused on community work would be more apprpriate I think.

If I am correct the front page shows neither "general discussion" or "eot" posts? Least for me it dosent.

Makes me smile to see all the awesome comments about Mapcore. I think Zap is right that it is probably wiser to have it grow slowly and not to force it.

Hopefully I can get some free time in the near future so I can focus some more effort at completing maps and getting mapcore working.

I think the rate at which Mapcore is expanding is pretty good. We don't want to get too big that we lose that close sense of community. But new blood is always good.

We're going to get swamped with Valve's recent link to us on their WIKI page. Which is good I guess as long as we can filter out the noobs and make sure that people keep a somewhat decent approach to giving and recieving critiscm.
