Now for the 1 million $ question: does it still use the "glorious" 1969 concept of Binary Space Partitioning?

What's new in the optimization process?

BSP is out, but I’m not sure how much better the new optimization method is. It seems a bit strange

For good? no more bsp tree? no visibility calculations during compile? Are large outdoor open maps viable?

Interesting! care to elaborate a bit about the new methods?

Not really considering my limited experience with the engine. I wouldn’t want to lead people astray.

Understandable. Any documentation one can consult to see the new inner workings of Source2?

I think all the documentation that exists as of yet, has already been posted here. I'd keep checking. Plus Marnamai's .doc is a living document, it's a big help.

That's pretty much what everyone making their own docs is doing, don't sweat it

So it appears the introduction doc has been updated to be more specific to HL:A. I don't have HL:A and wanted to learn Source 2 Hammer. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe you can move using SteamVR's tools once in-engine. I've found that CTRL works to crouch and left and right arrow keys will pan your view left and right, but that's it.

Apparently nobody can get it to work or cares. What a let down Source 2 was and Alyx.

What do you mean you can't open them properly?

What did you expect from a singleplayer VR game? To have playerbase around 50k players 4 months after release? lmao

Maybe if you explain the issue people will help? I use these tools everyday, they open fine.

Then it complains I don't have a HMD, but following the next step to exclude -vr and -vrtools is where I gave up because this is gameinfo.txt error 2.0 and I think this will stay for 10+ years like this. I don't have the patience to troubleshoot launching their 4 year old software. There are no forum posts either in the Source 2 section, and I'm not blaming Mapcore I'm blaming Valve because they appear to accomplish nothing noteworthy given unlimited time and money.

Why can't Source 2 launch properly for non VR users, and why can't we all just start making mods again? It feels like purgatory between Source and Source 2, they abandoned support for one 10 years before finishing the next.

If we were just more vocal about how much this sucks as a community to Valve, maybe they would catch on, but I think people are too nice to Valve. I personally do not even believe Valve is pro Mods nowadays, I think they're following the same trend as Activision Blizzard and they're going to perpetually lock everything down and then feed you walled garden 'curated' experiences like in CSGO.

I don't think there exist any proof that Source 2 is going to be a thing that we love like we did with Goldsrc and Source, because Valve has ideologically drifted and positioned itself as an arbiter in everything, even art. It makes no sense to me that Goldsrc and Source are binned while we get this half baked Source 2 experience.

I think you are the first person I heard had problems with launching the tools. It's pretty straightforward. You open authoring tools and you either check or un-check the box about vr mode.

Do you realise how much time it takes to learn new tools, workflow and to develop something interesting?

    LOL.

Lets not trash this thread with someone being sad because they dont know how to run the tools. If you need help with that go to help section of the forum.

I just finished a full scene in scr2, had it's problems with the tools here and there, nothing major. And the workshop already has a decent library of mods and growing every day. :)

We were vocal for ten years about HL3 and we still didn’t get it, what makes you think harassing them will change anything?

I hope you are wrong about the rest, I mean they released tools, for half-baked they are, so I can’t/don’t want to believe they are heading that way… hopefully is just the flat structure (if still in place) that is creating these problems
