Pretty ridiculous. As much as I would like to see steam get phased out, if the French court rules that the game "licenses" are in fact resellable its bad news for everyone.

They are appealing but its essentially the French supreme court that ruled against them so...

Was going to post this when I found out yday…

I think that behind a very pro-consumer initiative, hides lots of ignorance and misunderstanding of the media.

I would really like to see all developers pull their games from the France marketplace to avoid the reselling.

@blackdog The problem is all over Europe. The EU thinks they own the internet. You can thank them for every cookie pop-up you have ever had to click away from.

The current EU reps are so eerily similar to those congress members trying pass SOPA back in 2011. They kind of have good intentions but are so out of touch with what they are ruling over that they dont see the obvious flaws with what they are trying to pass. John Bain asked in 2011 why old men who could barely use a keyboard be allowed to make such radical restrictions on the internet, well today why are people who seem out of touch with their own home countries making laws that affect not only every EU member, but nearly every country in the world? I think the EU as a whole is a good idea but this current batch of reps seems so strangely inept at understanding basic concepts and nearly every EU citizen ive seen hates their own rep.

Then people are surprised at the brits for wanting to bail the EU.

Yeah I have no idea how this becomes workable. Only going to reduce the value of games across the board

Don’t mix oranges and apples. The problem with Brexit was a misrepresentation of what they wanted, why they wanted and how to implement. Which is a shit show.

There are also good things that come from the EU, above all laws to protect the environment.

Anyway we probably don’t want to go down this line.

It’s not in the interest of many EU states to agree with this french court, given the export value of the games industry. It’s not even in France’s best interests even though they are a smallish player by comparison to other EU members. I think the worst thing that could happen here is Steam pulling out of France.

The only dev in the world who can get away with an entirely free second hand digital goods market is Nintendo. Because they have full control of the hardware and a handfull of the most beloved IP:s in the history of video games.

I wouldn’t like to imagine a world where every game deb (bar Nintendo) require a live service subscription in order to get around the used market regulation.

    @blackdog

I guess the will of the people was debatable due to it almost being 50/50 and half of the population being unregistered/not voting.

A 2/3 vote requirement would make make more sense so half the population wasn't against the decision.

At this point it is your say whether there was a sampling error or misrepresentation error, because that seems to be the problem most people bring up.

Here in America we have something even more shit which is the electoral college...

Sorry dudes, but it kinda makes sense to be able to sell a $60 game steam or no steam. Especially when you can't just install it, sell and keep playing.

Here's a guess as to what it could look like. Made this in paint.net in a few minutes.

This would be a shit show.

Does the owner of the key get all of the money from the sale or does some go to steam and the devs too? Nobody would ever buy new as you could essentially buy "second hand" and get the exact same hing for cheap. It's not like the case is going to be damaged or the disk scratched on a digital product.

This would probably lead to everyone going subscription only route and that'd be horrible.

Now add "Factory New, Minimal Wear, Field Tested, Well Worn, Battle Scarred" conditions and it instantly fixes one of the points Beck brought up

Kinda sucks for the devs but I would like someone to give me a valid argument of why you can't sell a digital game that costs $60 vs a retail disc that costs $60 (in both cases its a transfer not a copy or duplicate).

    ???

Well no, this is fundamentally and conceptually wrong (licenses).

You can’t resell a cinema ticket, hell you can’t get a refund if you don’t like it.

There’s no valid answer except: you can’t prevent people to resell a physical object*.

Thats why digital distribution started in the first place. Yes GabeN would say it was to update the game and make them “services”, but the first motif for devs was to circumvent the second hand market.

*You can of you have DRMs in place, Microsoft tried it and we’ve seen how it ended.

The problem is a fundamental cultural misunderstanding: the average Joe doesn’t understand the terms of service, like I said in the quote above.

You can resell a DVD though. Your comparison doesn't hold up.
