He probably really means that he finds Stalkers' art more impressive than the art in the UE3 showings.

The art at the UE3 shows was so impressive it was scary ![]()
I saw some of the speedtree tech before and i wasn't impressed but those screenshots show something more powerful than i thought it was. Some great stuff there both in artwork as engine. I'm impressed.
It just shows how specialised some facets of the industry are becoming. A solution purely focused on trees and foliage; a few years back the concept couldn't even be fathomed.
its funny, it looks like Epic just sucked up any real competition lol
This is pretty awesome stuff, and I have yet to wrap my head around it, but the possibilities for both companies are really opening up, and just like Tim Sweeney said the reality engine developer can make some nifty upgrades to UE3.
Many don't realize but 6-years experience (I assume this is commercial experience and not 6-years of garage hacking) is actually pretty much, and with that kind of knowledge you can really do amazing stuff. Especially ince the last 6-years have been pretty magical in the field of real-time graphics.
I don't see anything hostile, and I don't actually see Reality Engine as a competition in any way, small companies that couldn't afford big names like D3, Source, UE bought Reality Engine, so they were in two completely different categories, and this buy doesn't take UE3 any closer to the cheap engines so how this is buying competition? If Epic bought id or Valve THEN it would have been buying out competition.
And usually in hostile takeovers they just buy the stock majority of a company, freeze it's licences, fire it's employees and cease the company just to a brand (example Sierra), come on people, I tought that you have seen EA do this enough of times that you'd recognise a hostile takeover.
Forcing companies that would usually buy a cheaper engine to buy your more expensive engine because there's no good cheaper engine left (wouldn't know anything besides realityengine) is buying out competition as well but in a more indirect way.
Here is a developers (!?) point of view
I'm asking myself how much this "discount" on upgrading to UE3 is and what happened to the other people who worked on the reality engine. I would also laugh very hard if next month that guy gets fired again from Epic.
I dont think that would be a disaster for him as he is prolly pretty rich by now anyway, as he sold his stuff to them prior he was hired, Were talking about more than just 20 000 dollar or so you know ![]()
Deal is ok, good for me but on the long term it might give them a bad name if they keep doing this kind of stuff ![]()
QuoteWill someone please point me to a game that used the Reality Engine, or the Unreal 3 engine? Oh right...there aren't any. Fuck.
Obviously this guy is unaware of Metrinome (sp?) or any of the many games that have licensed the UE3.
Fuck the gamers? I say fuck that guy. He's just pissed cuz hes not Tim Johnson.
He sounds a bit overly frustrated but deep down he has a point, about where games are going, about updates of graphics and about if this is good for games or not.
By the way, Friechamp, there's some answers in wattah's link:
-The discount for the UE3 engine is nice but for some companies even a 90% discount will still not get them anymore.
-The other guys at the dev of RealityEngine will keep on working on it.

Yeah, but his arguement falls flat on its face when he starts generalising that all gamers (inlcuding us, obv.) don't have a clue basically about what makes a good game, only being interested in graphics. Which is complete and utter bullshit.
He is exaggerating but he sure has a point. Why do people still buy FIFA 2007? All those WO2 shooters are quite alike why do people still buy upgrades, they're not playing better! I think what he's trying to say was that let's say 10 years ago most games had some unique gameplay, nowadays graphics are the main thing.
Oh and i don't think mapcore people qualify as the average gamer.

The guy is a bit harsh but he's right!
It's kinda naive if you think that Epic is a nice, friendly company who only wants the best for devs and gamers. If I were an independent developer (like the metronome team) I would be really pissed because Epic is stealing them the opportunity to create a high quality game for few money.
I rather play a cool innovative game like metronome than a simple-stupid-FPS like unreal with a whole shitload of shaders and stuff.
FU Epic, thats all...
Dude, what are you smoking?

It's true. Epic IS a friendly, nice company; I've met most of those guys because I worked there for a little while. But they are also a business like any other game developer out there. As much as they cater to the gamer and to the developer, they still have to be a business and do businessy things like, for instance, buyout a smaller company should they see fit.

That's completely wrong. The Metronome guys aren't being forced to upgrade to UE3 or to pay any extra money in any way to anybody. They are free to keep working on Metronome with RE, which I imagine they will.
As far as i know the rest of the people working on RE will keep on doing just that so Metronome will see the daylight
That dumb fuck who wrote the blog article was talking like Reality Engine was the ONLY engine in the world besides UE3, Source and Doom3 (why don't they give doom3 engine a name).
Go here and take a pick, there are all kinds of engines and actually if based on open source engine, great engine development that uses shaders and wha not is actually pretty cheap http://www.devmaster.net/engines/
And the funny part was that Reality Engine wasn't actually even that high tech so developers are better off without it.
