I can agree the smoke is far the nicest smoke I have seen in a while, but let's be honest, this isn't a step forward from old engines, this is a step outward, not forward, something had to be done and since the current pixel and vertex shaders play with light and shadow, they went for them. It's a firm decision many developers have made with engines, but really you can look at all the current engines and see the same results, example Farcry, everything looked like chrome and plastic, too shiny and some places even had little white spots without the rest of the effect, like bounce, reflect and such.

You don't have to push up the light values in order to make something look realistic, it's just the way developers do it these days, they candy things out with it. Take a look at HL2 it had very very realistic looking texture materials like wood, rusty iron, concrete you name it. No shiny spots anywhere.

I have always been and will always be against these photon/global illumination/radiance they are just ways to make player go WOW, not ways to add realism, the over shinyness is pissig me off, since I fiddle around prettymuch with game graphics I see how hollow they are.

BiA is a great game, it has some unique design elements, but it too is guilty for the 'add sugar to'-scheme, if you look at any screenshot or video clip it has the annoying shiny effect, I don't know which one they used in that, but the same effect is in Painkiller and World of Warcraft. Just developers should stop being retards about the shiny effect and lights, it's not going to make your games look better, nor play better.

    Thank you.

The bloom can be turned off, or you can manually increase / decrease it.

You seem to be slamming things that are shiny... and nothing else...

someone has balls since half of the developers here are from gearbox

It's not about having balls really. I hear comments like that all the time. If you could enumerate your issues it would help. From the way I see it BiA and CoD are two massivly different games... and aren't really in competition.

Then again what would I know about it.

I'm aware of the fact that there are a number of Gearbox members here, but why should that stop me from expressing my views on their work? If anything, i would think they would want to hear candid opinions from those who purchased their game. Wether or not BiA and CoD are in competition in the market place is irrelivant to me, i could care less about that. What matters to me most is the overall experience, is the game fun, enjoyable, and worth its weight in what i paid for it. Again, to be candid, BiA was, from where i sit, a waste of my hard earned 50+ dollars. Why? Well, for starters i was far from impressed by the graphical presentation. Overall, i think that it was rather dull and in places almost amature (the ground textures were rather bland, some textures didnt tile properly or were horrendously repetitive), its beyond me why they didnt offer more latitude to the player when adjusting his/her video prefrences. The AI, which was praised in articles and reviews, i found to be pretty retarted, espically the allied AI. I would command my squad or tank to attack or provide cover fire to a position well within sight and they wouldnt react, in fact i had to restart the game at points b/c i couldnt complete the objectives on my own and my squad, for some reason, wouldnt acknowldge my commands. The gameplay was far too linear, it was as if i was playing a Quake 3 powered game, being funneled down the same relative paths with very little choice in where to go and how to overcome the tasks at hand. Lastly, i have found the multiplayer to be deplorable. Severs are almost non-existant and some of the very basics of all multiplayer features had been left out in the orginal release. This brings me to the most disconcerting aspect of my entire experience. The release version of BiA, that is the version on the DVD, is plagued by a massive list of bugs and errors, many of which should have been discovered during a beta testing period, i would think. I can only speak for myself, but i do not pay 50 + dollars to have to wait for patches to be released so that i can get a game to a playable state. My tone may be rash, but we are talking about a decent chunk of money here. I think that alot can be done with BiA and it can probably taken to an entirely different level, but as it stands now i am not impressed. These, naturally, are my own thoughts and have nothing to do with Gearbox or its members, as someone who wants to enter the industry i look up to, and repsect, all of you.

Yeah, I am and it's for a reason, there are several games out there that actually look just the same (not actually higher polycounts, not higher texture resolution) but they have taken the game from last year, done some neat lighting tricks with pixel shared 2.0 and added a physics engine and voila they think they have a game there.

I'm glad that the very small but noticeable change of gamers heart for rich story over flashy graphics, many developers are again looking at the direction of adventure games, especially after when they noticed how many gamers were posting their opinions about Lucasarts dropping the Sam & Max and Fullthrottle games on various boards across the net, some even went for that far that they said they'll boycott Lucasarts and Lucasfilms products for these (even tho I wonder why, Lucasarts and Lucasfilms have very little in common). I just wish that this kind of gamer mentality, should put those no talent game developers out of business who only know how to copy and add sugar to their games.

Now I don't mean that there have not been genuinely intelligent and groundbreaking concept out there, like for example, Stalker, seems to be a game with some very nice story and alot of content, reminds me of a Finnish masterpieces Max Payne and Max Payne 2. Games should be like that, and not like Doom3 or the latest Medal of Honor.

(disclaimer. these are opinions and opinions may be discussed but they may not be changed, if you have problem with these, go call santaclaus)

Call of Duty 2 looks like yet another one of those EA mega(s)hits.

I expect extremely linear gameplay and those great dramatic scripted sequences.

And Kosmo aren´t you the little patriot. Max Payne was a masterpiece but tbh Max Payne 2 was only a graphics update with another storyline,

but then again aren´t all sequals?

are you affiliating CoD with EA now? :x

maybe you were just drawing a comparision but it's made by Infinity Ward and published by Activision. just so nobody gets confused.

I know this is the CoD2 thread, but I can't let this one go. First of all I REALLY agree with you that all thoose shiny/plastic materials are extremely ugly. My opinion about the materials in HL2 vs. FarCry however is exactly the other way around. FarCry got nice textures, nice bumps and no unneeded ugly shine effects.

In HL2 however, everything is just made of plastic or is shining. From the very first minutes in the train and on the trainstation I was vommiting from the horrible shine of everything. The metal in the train was not a shade of grey as you could expect from metal, but rather it was some hippie mix of yellow and white.

When I exited the train there were thoose woodbenches which looked like that someone had spent several hours on polishing and waxing them. Having that wood shine like a lamp just looked so incredible wrong.

About the CoD2 screen posted at first: I do think it should be taken with a grain of salt. IMO it's the weakest of the four that were posted with that gamespot article. The game is still very deep in production and IW leaves a LOT of time for testing and polish.

    i think its sexxeh

    i enjoyed CoD a lot

i had a great time playing it, the whole thing, the british missions where a little stiff.

i haven't played BIA yet so ignore me if this was in that game.

i'd like to see a ww2 or even a modern warfare game where you have a squad of members in the game and if one dies in a mission they stay dead the entire game and the story slightly changes throughout the game and at the end of the game if you are the only one alive it is a different ending just like if you had your entire squad still alive.

this could be achieved by mission scripts and trigger events, it might be more work but it would increase the replayability of the game by a lot.

    ww2 games are getting old

but i'm never going to stop playing until i am completely satisfied with a D-Day map with guys fighting intelligently across the beach and dying everywhere, i mean all out war.

there should be a game dedicated to D-Day alone - the paratroopers to the tanks to the soldiers to the navy. on all sides (canadian british and american).

d-day is my favorite battle event in all of history.

If only it were that simple... You talk about a completely branching story as if it were simple and easy. It's not. It's far too limiting of the entire storyline to really do it.

Not to mention that every person would get completely different people killed in the missions. This provides no global arc between all the people that have the game and the following games in the series.

Well yeah, I wasn't going to put Max Payne 2 on that, but then again, I had tons of laughs and great moments with that game so it's a great game, surely beat some ass with good size story. The minus being like every other game like this, there is no replay value, just like HL2, didn't even go near it with a stick after playing it through.

Can't really compare FarCry and HL2 graphics with eachother, I don't even put them in the same league there, FC had too much of that sugar, with all the "Look at the beautiful lush forests we have, please! Don't look at out thin story", but yeah I can agree, HL2 had some of those moments too, actually it had much more of those "Take a lick on our snazzy puzzle and forget that this part of the story just doesn't add up" or "Hey check out this cool piece of gravity defying weapon and forget that we designed the whole game around it, just like Halo and Xbox".

Ofcourse the picture was the worst one of the pack of screens, I saw and error there and wanted to use it as leverage to bash this game, since I have seen that same error in a million other games.

guh, the MP2 story made me *gag*. All that dark brooding introspective antihero bullshit was toooo much. If I hadn't been able to skip past it I couldn't have finished the game, and the gameplay felt weaker than the first but I had to kill some time so I blew through it.

I really loved Max Payne 2 I enjoyed the story, I just thought it was dark.

I was under the impression that if a teammate died they were dead forever in BiA D:? I've been restarting when they die for nothing

Yep, MP2 was a really great game. That game just worked the way a good game has to do.
