What is now the best way to colour a greyscale painting ? Using the hue-and saturation tool and the other image adjustmenttools or the brushtool set to color mode ?
Or maybe something else ... I just wondered

I'm totally against doing grayscale paintings and then color them artificially. It really limits you. However it can work in some cases. Here's a very good tutorial on this technique:

yeah i agree it's like they have different roots.. you dont merge them.
There are great advantages to initially working in grayscale. What it does is give you great control over lightcomposition and atmosphere early on. Basically, if a composition works in grayscale it will work in color. If you use colors at the start these things tend to become confucing since it's difficult to be sure if it's the colors or the shades that are behind ruining the overall picture. My advice is to atleast desaturate the entire painting from time to time to make sure the light composition works. If you do begin in grayscale, don't wait too long before you introduce the fundamental colors. You really don't want to wait to the very end or the shades and colors won't communicate. Just make the initial sketchy composition with light and atmosphere in grayscale and start introducing colors from there.
Aight, thx for the replyes

think it worked out ok for a first try after a long time of doing nothing of this kind of speedpainting. the cgtalk tutorial thread pushed me to do something again (although my work is nowhere near as good as what they've got over there).
maybe i'll scale the picture up and detail it more but wanted some feedback on perspective and mood first.
The brush you are using totally kills the feeling imo. Use hard edge brushes instead, they will give you a much better visual. As for the composition I think the light contrast should be bigger. It looks very flat at the moment, give this thing stronger shades/highlights =)

yes i was looking into this as well but couldn't find a decent one yet. mind to share which brushes you use?
You never use not soft edge brushes ?
Always hard edge and smudge ?
Just use the default round hard edge brush
Peris uses a square brush as well but I can't get used to it.
I have to get used to being simple with my brushes as well. I use a custom square-ish brush and the round one mostly though.
i was reading some nice article on using shapes. hence i made a quick sketch / exercise

i am actually pretty impressed how well a shape can be transformed into nearly everything

By the way, I made 1 year ago, a tuto about hair. It's really an easy & a quickly way. If you want, I could try to translate this one in a way understandable, I hope...
