Windows 10 upgrade

I just don't care as much as I use to. I still build my comp, but I think i'll wait for my next full build to install 10. For now my machine runs fine and it will be supported for a bit.

Had my Win10 secure and ready, but got completely turned off after seeing this

Sticking to 8 for now, did not see a big reason to make the change yet anyway, likely would have been unnecessary and caused issues anyway to my regular PC use.

I don't know how you can expect a digital personal assistant help you or recognize people you may want to call if it doesn't access the contacts and stuff like that.

The thing that they shove ads in your throat is very annoying, that was never shown before (of course).

@Symix well evidently they are still doing things cheap in the presentation department, that's so Microsoft and so annoying, since other things are so polished. Some things are just ridiculous, like I was watching this overview and at some point there's a ridiculous option screen which is like 128px wide, with only switches aligned vertically /facepalm

Win10 is nice, apart from the fact that it doesn't install alongside Linux, and the whole "we collect info in an OS" idea. It's worth noting that I cannot find half of those settings, and I'm on the last preview build (RTM)

Linux Mint is looking nice these days, too bad not everything supports Linux. Valve was trying to tell us something this whole time

This is pretty cool, windows 10 has built in video recording for games. Press win+g

I have no reason to move away from 7...

Having the upgrade files sitting in my PC since Wednesday awaiting my backup, I finally had the time today to finalize everything and went ahead with the upgrade.

Very smooth and no issues at all; only thing I had to do after the upgrade was to install the new Win10 Nvidia driver.

I kept a local profile just like win 7 without signing in with a Microsoft live account, disabled all privacy settings, ditched Cortana and all is fine

Tested many programs and everything works out of the box; tested CSGO and Black Mesa as well as CSGO SDK - flawless operation.

Hope this helps anyone who is on the fence with the upgrade.

what's the drawback of having the live account connected?

I've had mine connected for my Win8.1 installs across multiple devices. Tbh, it hasn't really meant much other than consistent theme colours and background as I don't use the windows store to have the app synchronisation, lol. I did a custom install to ensure that M$ weren't going to get their hands on anything I wasn't ok with.

if I'm not mistaken, the relevant drawback is that if you log on with the live account, you have to log on every time you use your computer. If you don't want to have any password then you're screwed

For a desk computer it could make sense if you want it to boot a tiny bit faster, since you just have to press a button and do whatever you want until it is ready to use. I do agree with you though on the fact that a password is necessary.

I'm on it since 2 hours now and I should say that I like it. The step was smooth and I'm pleasantly surprised that everything went well

Maybe you wouldnt want a safe password like you would use in online accounts but something you can type really fast, "123" "hgf" etc. Keeps roomates/family members away but if someone really wants to get into your windows acc difficult passwords won't stop them.

It took me over 5 hours to upgrade from windows 7. I don't know when W10 was downloaded, but when it was done it warned me that it was ready to install whenever I wanted.

The installation process took 2 hours, but when it was about to finish I saw a BSOD and it rolled back to W7. After waiting for windows 10 to be redownloaded and the installation process to start again, I tried again. Second time it took 1 1/2 hour without BSOD, the only error being that in the first time all windows were black and impossible to read any button. With a bit of luck I was able to change the theme and reset the settings so that all windows were readable again.

I had to reinstall Intel HD drivers and the audio drivers, only to find that Intel dropped support for 2nd and 3rd gen core i lines. Realtek also seems to not have certified windows 10 drivers.

Had a second BSOD some hours ago, the same error message from the first time I tried and failed to upgrade windows 7. But this time I had coincidentally left my scanner turned on, which I turned off to see if somehow it was the reason for windows 10 reboot lop. Fortunately it was and that allows me to give you all a tip: Kernel auto boost lock acquisition with raised irql seems to be related to some hardware or driver that is incompatible with windows 10.

I'll delete windows 7 later, so far I have no plans to go back.

My upgrade process went pretty nicely, suprisngly.

Got some small issues (display drivers for quadro card) but it seems to be fixed now. Nice improvements overall.

Took me about 30 mins or so to update. I then downloaded the .iso so I could perform a clean install which took another 30 mins.

Not had any problems apart from it failing to activate. Spoke to Microsoft's tech support and they told me the servers are probably getting hammered with all the requests so it should get through within 48 hours. Hope so because it won't let me change my theme or anything and I'm stuck with pink tiles on my start menu

Apart from that it's gone very smoothly. Everything I've tried has worked right away.

Any special tools you are using that you were happy you didn't need patches or updates to have working? (UE, Unity, Maya etc)

I haven't tested anything like that yet. Tried a few games etc and they all worked first time without any tinkering. I could maybe give stuff like that a test over the weekend. I've not heard of anyone having any problems with those though!
