So I figured it's about time we start a dedicated thread on mapcore for fighting games discussion so we stop spamming up the "what have you been playing" thread with extended fighting games discussion. Hopefully I can change the title of this thread when different events occur.

So who's watching EVO this weekend and if so what are you watching?

I made sure I got all my work and a good portion of my home stuff out of the way so I can maximize my EVO time. I warned all my family and friends as well. Unfortunately the EVO USF4 initial brackets were all day friday. FORTUNATELY my work was understanding and there were about 3 people on my team second screening twitch so I got a good amount of viewing time.

I'm currently watching UMVC3 and am toying with the thought of simultaneously watching the Guilty Gear Xrd stream.

    Highlights so far :

[*]Strider 801 taking a triple perfect over a 12 year old player. The 12 year old players response to the loss was more mature than most adults. He's got a bright FGC future.[*]A UMVC3 team consisting of Narohudo-Kun, Trish and Rocket Racoon. The announcers were at a loss on being able to describe what was happening. I would LOVE to see that team win EVO.[*]That dude playing Poonko taking off his shirt and putting it on Poonko's head. He unleashed an angry beast who also removed his shirt then proceeded to body. [*]Valle beating Bonchan with Hugo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4r6Ev7FvwtI
For USF I'm going for :

[*]Smug - Because he's been such an upset this year and plays a nuts Dudley[*]Strider 801 - Because he plays Abel[*]Anyone who plays Makoto[*]Air - Vancouvers pride
I would have gone for Haitani but he doesn't play Makoto anymore

    For UMVC3 I'm going for :

[*]That guy with Narohudo-Kun in his team[*]Full Schedule, because he pisses off FChamp
Wow

Razer fucked up EVO by having one of their garbage fightsticks fail during the final round.

God I hate Razer, they make such fragile garbage products.

I have zero experience with fighting games so excuse my ignorance, but why do they use controllers like that? looks real uncomfy and not ergonomically at all. Is it a traditional or nostalgia thing like people buying music on vinyl again?

It's because most fighting games haven't evolved from the Street Fighter style, so you need 6x2 buttons (Low/Med/High kicks and punches) plus the stick uses switches so doing direction-based specials is really easy compared to a traditional playstation style analog stick or d-pad. That being said, gamecube controller is still the best fighter controller and no one can tell me different

    Warning : My opinion

Games like street fighter are essentially unplayable with a gamepad because you need to be able to get from one button to the next with often very short frame windows. When all the buttons are laid out over your hand it's easier to transition.

I would say the mortal kombat series is an exception though. It has less buttons but it also has block as a button. Trying to hold block on an arcade stick while trying to transition out to other buttons is futile. With a gamepad you can have your back index finger hold down block and leave your thumb free to react. That said having a button for block sucks and I think netherworld agrees by the fact they used back for block in Injustice.

I much prefer joysticks, not just for fighting games but for arcade games too.

I recently bought one of those TE2 ps4 sticks. They are nice! I love how everything is easy access and the cord can be tucked away.

I also just started getting into ultra (for pc), it's.... ok? XD

I have to buy a ps4 this week.

Is this the TE2 madcatz ones with the sanwa parts? I have the SF4 evo one from a few years back and in regards to the actual buttons it's probably the best. They are ultra loose.

I started a player ID list at the top of the screen if you are interested, leave your name in this thread and I'll keep it updated.

I seem to remember us playing a couple years back on steam and you were quite good Jason

So I got into the Rising Thunder alpha, then once again realized that I'm awful at "real" fighters. Is there a good way of learning how to do combos and such/how to not be a babby?

Rising Thunder is actually built with that in mind. I think there's not even a concept of a fireball or joystick-button motion. Is that correct?

yeah, there is just low/med/high and 3 specials. I'm wondering about actually stringing that stuff together, how do I even start figuring that out?

I'm not familiar with that game but considering he's taking the friendly route I would guess that all characters have a similar progression. Usually that means pressing weak-medium-strong in sequence.

Yeah, that seems to be right, then what past that? Just experiment or no-life it and spend all my time on reddit?

That's probably the biggest mistake beginners make. Combos are not what you should be focusing on. You should be focusing on the fundamentals and making sure that every action you do doesn't leave you in a deficit.

Being good at combo execution is only useful if you can get to a point where you can actually execute a combo.

Alright, then where do I start? Do any games actually teach a beginner how to get started well yet?

Oops sorry, I didnt get a thread notification update. I will prepare some videos on youtube and put them on this thread.

There's a guy named James Chen who has a lot of tutorial videos that explain the fundamentals of fighting games. I'll look around his channel and see what's most relevant.

The main thing to focus on is not leaving yourself open and positive trades.

SFV was up again last night and worked marvelously! Really interesting the subtle changes. I like how when chun-li ducks it animates like SFIII

There seems to be more priority on the animation which has the potential to be a bad thing but right now it feels good. Capcom did a good job balancing animation priority. In fact they used it to their advantage. It makes weak hits canceling larger hits more profound now.

Honestly with modern input buffers the only time you need an arcade stick is if you’re playing a character that needs to hold down individual buttons like Balrog in Street Fighter (Turn Punch) or May/Eddie in Guilty Gear (Dolphins/Shadow).

I tried to play Rising Thunder and realised I can’t because my stick is only six buttons. Beat some people using the keyboard using Chel, who is apparently overpowered because PC gamers can’t deal with three decade old Ryu tactics. I really don’t like the design philosophy of the game because it’s aiming to be a more accessible Street Fighter 4, which in turn was a more accessible version of all other fighting games, yet keeps the same misguided one-frame link and FADC focus… They could easily make this game work with four buttons if they allow double inputs and they’re not against that because it’s used for the super.Only game I'm playing right now is Guilty Gear Xrd. They've also announced my character from the older games will be in the new version, but also they're adding a load of shitty BlazBlue mechanics to it so it's not all good news.
