    Hey,

How exactly do I get started on creating custom textures for my maps?

I know how to convert them etc, there are plenty of tutorials out there for it.

But how exactly do you make them?
When I try searching for tutorials on "how to make textures" there are just said vtf edit tutorials there.

Any resources someone knows or I can use?

    Mfg

polycount wiki has a bunch of tutorials:

Natural progression of learning the trade would be to start with photo sourced textures, then partly or fully hand painted textures then to use 3d modelling and sculpting in your workflow. Or you learn something like Substance Designer for a procedural workflow.

First of all you need an image editing software, presumably Photoshop. Now you could use a free alternative - Gimp, but there be treasure on this sea landlover, see, yarr *hint* pirate *hint*.

Then, it's all about getting to know how to use the interface of said program. Don't expect to become efficient right from the start. It will take a few weeks, all you need to do is to look up tutorials on YouTube (where else would you look for them lol?). A few search keys that only the pros use : Photoshop begginner tutorial; Photoshop interface tutorial; Photoshop texture creation tutorial; Photoshop filters tutorial; Photoshop tilable texture tutorial(important stuff right here?)...

Your mission is to learn how to manipulate real life images to create them into textures that you can use in the Source engine using software tools. Now, you're going to use real pictures and turn them into textures, a good source for this is CGTextures.com or just Google Images.

You're going to use things like:

    -Filters

    -Healing brush tool

    -Hue/Saturation

    -Contrast/Brightness

-Offset, to tile the textures a lot. At least I do. Don't take my word for it, someone might do it in a different way and will shout at me below. Just dick around in the image editing software and learn how to use it.

Things to look up after you learn how to texture:

    - Bumpmaps

    - Specular maps

I'm sorry if I missed something, I'm just an amateur and I'm sleep deprived, bye.

Thanks for this in-depth post, fortunatly I have photoshop already (fly the black flag!) and know how to use it, but especially the keywords of the tile tutorials gonna help me a lot, thanks.
