I posted this on the Natural Selection forums a couple days ago, so some of you may have seen it, but I know there's a few of you here who enjoy a good game soundtrack now and then... Thought it worthy of a re-post here

So particularly with the inclusion of soundtrack CDs for Half-Life 2 and Dawn of War being made available with orders and pre-orders, I've started actively searching more soundtracks where I can find them. Turns out there's actually quite a few available online.

Blizzard made available a huge selection of tracks from Diablo 2 and Lord of Destruction over time a couple years ago. Many are available in one large pack, with a bunch more as single downloads. I kept up to date with these as they were originally released, but still have to go about grabbing them again. Most can be found here, with additional MP3s in the specific Bonus and Lord of Destruction sets.

More recently I've discovered a series of game soundtracks for free download on sites such as Fileplanet and FileShack (and I'm guessing you could find plenty of mirrors elsewhere, as these are official releases). Among these are:

    Deus Ex 2:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/files/130000/139383.shtml

    Chronicles of Riddick:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/142261.shtml

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=5125

    Men of Valor:

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=5310

    http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/144628.shtml

Metal Arms: Glitch in the System: (this is a fun one, check out the stereo intro to Rat Race in particular)

    http://www.fileplanet.com/files/130000/135381.shtml

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=4204

    Myth III:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/files/80000/80877.shtml

    Children of the Nile:

    http://www.fileplanet.com/files/140000/148784.shtml

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=6010

Some mods are even included - Red Orchestra:

    http://www.fileshack.com/file.x?fid=5844

This doesn't technically count, but don't miss the punkish cover of the Katamari Damacy theme song by TX-based Corey vs. Corey:

I've also been tracking down some other games with actual CD soundtracks... Freedom Fighters has one I've been meaning to get for a while, and apparently there is a Homeworld soundtrack CD available with the game of the year edition of that game. Curse me and my getting it early... (Izuno, maybe with your THQ and thus Relic connection, you could lend a hand? )

Then there are the games that should have soundtracks released, but don't... Like Beyond Good and Evil. *crie*

Painkiller and Battle out of Hell are killer soundtracks.

The Bloodlines soundtrack is badass, too.

    [Homeworld soundtrack]

Homeworld and Homeworld 2 are both products of Vivendi Universal Games. Any publication/use of music from those games must be with permission from the VUG legal department. Sorry, can't help ya on this one.

However, my cousin made a couple of short movies in film school using both HW and Half-Life music, and he got in touch with VUG legal and they allowed him to use a song or two. The catch was that it was for educational use only and not for a commercial release.

For this context, I am not sure how VUG would feel about releasing an entire soundtrack.

    back on topic...

I love the soundtrack from the original Quake by Trent Reznor.

Soundtracks for the 2 expansion packs are cool, though they are more orchestral in nature...still good, though.

I imagined that was probably the case Maybe I can just find a copy of the old GOTY edition with the soundtrack CD somewhere

In other news, yesterday was the greatest day ever. I found these, thanks to a nudge by a friend:

Beyond Good and Evil. 31 Mp3s. 172 megs. Awwwww yeah. *does a little dance*
