I don't think I'd mind being called a hypocrite by the internet for $1.4billion in the bank ![]()
Minesoft...Microcraft...you decide

On one side he doesn't look like the guy who would do that, but to me Minecraft looks really close to saturation, I don't see how anyone will be able to maintain it's popularity… so this is probably the best deal ever for Notch. Then he can still do stuff if he's passionate.
Don't understand why MS have to buy Mojang, can't they just sell the rights of the IP?
What is MS gonna do, a next-gen version of it that ppl won't like to play because of the graphics?

Pretty hypocritical after the Oculus Rift shit. But you can hypocritical me all night for 2 billion.
-
All valid points guys, but seriously, for 2 billion you can make me your bitch.
-
I dont think i would be any happier with 2 billion now instead of what i have.
-
I'm confident I would be happier with 2 billion dollars.
Worst case scenario everything is the same, but I shop at M&S instead of the Co-op.
-
Notch has always said that his price is 2 billion dollars.
QuoteAnyway, my price is two billion dollars. Give me two billion dollars, and I'll endorse your crap. -Notch 2012
Plus, he has gotten over the oculus buyout being a bad thing.

The thing is: he doesn't even maintain the game anymore. Jeb has been in charge of it for years. notch has been tinkering on new projects (that frankly haven't lead to anything substantial yet). The guy has made many millions - and yes, I know, more millions are always better - but even if his attitude has come across as snobbish at times, he always seemed to be very genuine and outspoken. He has often talked about how he wants Mojang to be best studio to work for in the world and made his disdain of big corporations public at numerous occasions (he cancelled the Rift version of Minecraft after Facebook picked up Oculus etc.). I was thinking, maybe the other shareholders want to cash out, but rumor has it that notch instigated the deal. Him being burnt out or a general discontent with making games under the microscope is my best guess at the moment.
Who are the other shareholders? Afaik Notch never took any outside investment because everything was funded out of cash flows. I thought I heard some employees have stock in the company, but the total amount doesn't add up to much leaving Notch as the only significant shareholder by a large margin (ie over 90 or 95%)...
....lest ye, Frie, have some other knowledge ye doth hast withholdeth?

Think he has a bit less than that: "Persson controls about 71% of Mojang, according to the annual reports of the Stockholm-based game maker and Persson’s holding company Notch Enterprises AB."
Still...I think he'll be ok...

a company called notch development owns mojang, which is 71% owned by notch and the rest owned by 2 other co-founders of Mojang. I assume non of the other employees own any stake ;o
There's your answer...

It's official: the Mojang shareholders cashed out and are leaving the company https://mojang.com/2014/09/yes-we…t-by-microsoft/
QuoteAs you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He’s decided that he doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he’s made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang.

I really wonder what they will do will all those dollars. Dafuq.
-
wohow ,2.5 BILLION dollars
-
I wonder if leaving everything behind and having that kind of money ends up being freeing creatively or if you end up never releasing anything because you actually don't *have* to...
Guess it depends on the Persson

This is usually how game businesses are handled, at least in Scandinavia. It's easier to just sell a company along with a product than just the product itself.

On a side note, I'd love to see Notch setup an investment business on the side for small indie projects... however unlikely that is.

guys, to put this into perspective, it's over 2 x the amount of money that doctor evil demanded in Austin Powers ...

+1 But I guess his pastebin was pretty clear he's not interested in entrepreneurship at all...
Kind of sad to have that much money sitting around, the possibilities!!
That being said, I don't know anything about Notch or what he intends to do with it... So perhaps he's making good use of it. -
Through it all I still have respect for Notch and Mojang. Minecraft is one of the greatest things in gaming so I can't give him any crap.
...and I still want Minecraft on my Vita.
