Haha, yeah because salary grids are completely abided by... nope.

And I don't buy that frame of reference arguement, as I would expect anyone in the industry after more than 3 years to have a pretty good frame of reference, family, kid, experience, ability, etc.

Family/Kid should have absolutely zero bearing on your salary tbh. If that's what you're saying...

    This. Everyone should do Glassdoor.

Question, do we think the game industry would have higher salaries if salaries were made more public? Would that raise the average salary if people started to figure out they were being paid less than they were worth?

Rather than on a company level, how do you think publicly available salaries might affect the industry? A lot of you have been in the industry a lot longer than me so I'm curious to see opinions.

Salaries would be higher if other companies knew what they were paying their employees. There's a natural incentive for the companies to offer more, in order to lure talent.

Any attempt at collective collusion would be undermined by the companies' desire to get the best talent.

That's exactly what drove the Montreal scene for years. Ubisoft pays least but offers a bunch of perks like on site doctor and banking and nursing for kids, other companies can't do that and arrived in Montreal later so they had to jack up prices (by about 30/40%)

I also like that glassdoor means you can't treat your employees, or prospective employees, like shit. At least, not without scaring off many others, or having to pay them more to grab their interest back.

    It's a good development overall.

I was thinking - how about we do an anonymous analysis for the core on how much each of us earn? The Gamasutra one hasn't been active since 2012, I reckon it's about time we add something to the site that will be useful as a resource for developers.

Great idea, but take in the account also the location. I think there will a big laugh when comparing salaries by absolute value in, for example, Czech Rep. or Poland and USA

I get you. However there's also a limit to how anonymous it will get if we start publicizing locations. That being said, location could be converted into a value multiplier that would be different for each country. In that respect you'd get fairly accurate conversions to local wages between countries. Sort of like the swatch internet time of currency...

Sounds like the multiplier part is gonna be pretty subjective though

at UWE me and Liam were totally on 60k a year. He wasn't about the money though and left to CA to be a hippie, getting to make collision boxes all day whilst rubbing marks back.

Not true - the multiplier will be a comparison of living standards between countries. In essence the easiest way of doing it would be to take whatever you have left once you've been taxed as well as some other basic costs - most likely just living expenses. Then you could compare the values with each other to create a statistical average, and use the average as a base for the multiplier.

Just use the Big Mac factor. That should qualify for most countries.

Good point. With that we could have a database setup and essentially create this fully automatically, and ensuring full anonymity.
