Fake money, aka facebook shares. Don't think the company has actually turned a profit yet

    facebook makes a profit.

Facebook has been getting more profitable each quarter. Diluted EPS has gone from $.03/share to $.20/share in a year.

colour me surprised. Would of thought it would be like amazon tbh, turn a loss for the first 7 years. It's what most internet companies do, no matter how successful.

True. And that stock isn't exactly worthless.

Hasn't FB stock practically been on a descending arc since it's debut?Anyway, this is definitely the most unexpected acquisition in tech history I guess. Now prepare for the annoying bloat of articles speculating a first-person exploration of your friend network when this is probably just an investment to secure the tech.

FB was founded in 2004. It grew on investment dollars that drove up its valuation. It didn't start making any kind of revenues until years in, and then when it went public its profitability was very small (relative to its market cap). So you are correct. In the end it probably waited the right amount of time before going public whereas other internet companies often go public to early.

    Meanwhile, get the popcorn.

But can we all just concede that Facebook is an Orwellian governmental/corporate tool to monitor the populace? And that maybe we shouldn't be literally inserting our faces into their newest device?

And I did not chip in ten grand to seed a first investment round to build value for a Facebook acquisition.

yes, let's keep oculus small and make sure they crunch 24/7 and can't keep up with demand for the damn thing because you funded them. that's how things work, right?

Reading Patrick Klepek's tweets about the conference call makes this deal sound pretty great. Sounds like Facebook is really just stepping in to provide funds and stuff

I get why people are freaking out over this, to me at least Oculus still feels like an indie darling and something that mainly the hardcore gaming crowd has been drooling over.

However it also feels like this makes pretty good sense if they actually wanna have the backing to do this properly for a mass market device. They've steadily been getting more funding from investors the last while, and to the Oculus team I bet they'd rather have deep pockets (or be owned by a company with deep pockets) and be able to execute the product as well as they can, especially now that there's slowly coming more competition in the field.

Anyway, I get the hate, if this dilutes Oculus gaming focus it sucks (even if Zuckerberg says they'll let em stay the same as they were), but it also makes good sense in terms of actually creating a mass market product IMO.

Most people are thinking that because FB bought Oculus, that all of a sudden your facebook wall is gonna turn into a virtual reality jizz fest. FB (the site) will probably have nothing to do with the Oculus Rift... They're a company, and they're investing in the future. They aren't neccessarily linking everything up together.

If you read the stuff Zuckerberg said, it all sounds pretty positive to me. They're going to let the Oculus Rift guys do what they're doing: build the best virtual reality device out there. What do you do with that once it exists? There's endless potential, of course games but also movies, live sports, product shopping, live conferencing, etc.

It doesn't surprise me that Oculus Rift is quickly becoming a big thing outside of gaming. Games might be driving its development, but genuinely awesome virtual reality has been a dream people have had for decades. This is a MASSIVE technological advancement and it's going to become a #1 interest of many, many businesses very soon.

At first I was annoyed by the news of Facebook buying Oculus. It made me annoyed for everyone who backed the project with the idea that it'd be the future of gaming for it to be turned in to a huge social media and data mining device. I just don't trust Facebook not to ruin it.

After thinking about it a bit longer, I'm coming around to the idea that this fulfils my dream of the cyberpunk future I've been seeing in films. Where VR is so mainstream and affordable that everyone has one.

I just really hope that Facebook doesn't ruin this one. I just can't believe they have any motivations besides money and userbase. I know it's a business and that's kinda the point, it just makes me a little sad by that prospect.

Way too early to tell what will happen imo. But Facebook have left previous acquisitions pretty much alone to get on with what they do. So hopefully will be the same for the rift, doing what they do, with a bunch of extra cash!
