computer going into standby mode for no reason

    Hey guys

    I hate to post this kind of stuff here, but I have looked everywhere and can't find any solutions.

    A few months ago my PC started going into standby mode for no apparent reason. The screen turns off but the fans still run and the cpu lights are still on. The only way to get back to windows is to manually restart it.

    This wasn't too big of a problem since it would happen now and then, but it's been getting increasingly worse to the point that it doesn't even boot fully anymore, it just goes into standby after boot. Sometimes it crashes before that and the pc keeps turning on and off trying to start.

    What puzzles me is that it can happen anytime, most of times when i'm only doing simple stuff like browsing or watching a video. I have checked the temperatures several times and they seem completely normal. I also cleaned an reseat all cables and parts but it didnt help a thing.

    Has anybody ever had this problem? I think I'll just buy a new mobo and try it out, but I was wondering if this could be related to otherhardware piece too.

    I'm thinking voltage/PSU. If you have access to a spare PSU, try it out to see if it works. I don't know how new your PSU is, but it could definitely be a sign of a PSU dying.

    Yes, this could be a several things. Defective components, PSU, heat (even if you checked), etc. So the only advice I can give for now is this:


    Open your case, unplug everything you don't need. You have multiple drives, disconnect them (only leave your boot disk connected). Disconnect your DVD/BR drive. If you have onboard video, remove your GPU. You get the point. Just leave the bare minimum so you can start normally and browse and stuff. If the problem is still there than you know you where to look (mobo, CPU, memory, PSU or boot disk). Which is still pretty broad, I know.


    The point is, that hopefully the problem stopped. Which means you can start connecting stuff again (one thing at a time) until you know what caused it. That's what we always did at tech support. It's very unlikely that it's a CPU or memory issue. If those options remain it's either the mobo or PSU.


    Also, sorry, but customer support does this to a man, make sure your Windows (assuming you're using this) Power plan is set correct

    Alright, removed my gfx card earlier today and to my surprise the computer has been running fine all day


    Just requested an RMA with Gigabyte, hopefully it's just the gfx card!

    Yea i'm not gonna buy Gigabyte again. Nice cards when they are new but just too frail in the long run. Had some similar problems with my card alongside failing fans. Got a MSI card now and am super happy with it. It's very sturdy (metal instead of cheap plastic parts) and the fans are even more quiet then Gigabyte's.

    I've had GPUs from both NVIDIA and AMD from various manufacturers during the past 10 years, and every single damn one has just gone kaput after a few years (if that). They just don't seem to be built to last any more, which is why I would prioritise getting long or lifetime warranty (some manufacturers offer this as standard).

    Yeah it's ridiculous how frail these cards are these days... At least Gigabyte offers a 3 years warranty, so the repair should be OK. It still sucks not being able to use the PC for games/3D for like 3 weeks tho .
