The gameplay demo looked alright, but I was left wishing the daytime gameplay was more like the nighttime gameplay, and less like Dead Island. I'd much rather have to solve problems by more parkour than more tossed sawblades and electro wrenches, because those things are kinda dumb and Dead Rising 2 did it better anyway (both the sawblades and the dumbness in zombie games).

So game is finally out! Managed to play some late last night and it feels good!

I like the parkour mechanics, and I like how you do want to avoid large groups of zombies, although I do feel the battle stamina system is a little too harsh. I think I could swing a wrench more than 4 times before I'm tired!

Just need a coop partner now!

Ye, run and climb for hours, can only swing four times: lol.

Anyway i didn't know this was coming out now… they didn't promote it at all? I was expecting much more after the attention it grabbed after the presentation

I played the first night mission last night, and holy shit... I cacked myself the whole way, LITERALLY left a breadcrumb trail of ass nuggets... the "volatiles" are the scariest motherfuckers... It becomes a game of cat and mouse, you can see their view cones on the radar to try and avoid, and they respond to noise. You need to try and evade them and all the normal infected they bring as backup.

This game has just shown it's other side. you NEED the "dead island day time play" because night time is seriously stressful

I lost the hype when i first saw that the combat and craft were pasted from Dead Island. I might give it a try though, parkour + zombies are still good selling points

The parkour is really fluid imo. You gauge quite quickly what sort of jumps you can make, and a lot of things are climbable, even metal window fences, and slight lips around the edge of buildings.

So far, everything I've seen that I could latch onto I can, as long as I am in reach of it.

I didn't play any of the dead island games so I didn't find anything off-putting. Having said that...

I'm totally hooked to this game. It's really a blast.

The parkour is done well and once you level it up, it really gets fluid like in Mirror's Edge style fluid.

Though It's sometimes confusing where to land from high places since the garbage piles arent always in any obvious locations, and I really just figured out that you can also land on garbage containers without fall damage... which aren't even colored blue like the garbage bag piles.

Random events are also really nice, I always go for the air drops. They are fun to get especially in the night when theres lots of nasty and powerful zombies around. There seems to be a nice balance of random events it doesn't feel like theres too many of them at any given point.

Resources seem to have a good balance also. I don't seem to get too many medpacks or money. I run out of medpacks really quickly if I decide to go dicking around during night times. And then I have to search buildings the next day for materials. The prices for really good melee weapon or gun is so high that you burn everything right there for one good piece and most of the time it seems like a good investment since it's extremely rear to get a good weapon from your enemies or chests.

I've only played co-op once with some randoms and it seems like it's done right though I'm worried it might get too easy to play once you get a full group of people. You can progress the main campaing in co-op which is awesome. I wish Far cry 4 had this feature.

It also had a versus style multiplayer which felt really unfair alone against the hunter zombie, but I guess it's fun when there's a group against the hunter. It was nice also that the versus games can occur when playing the campaing, like getting invaded in dark souls.

Performance is also pretty good with my good old 660 GTX. My fps is averaging at 40-50 with everything but shadows at high.

Well, these are my impressions of the past 8 hours into the game.

edit: 660 gtx instead of 460 - silly me.

I've read it has serious performance issues on PC, especially amd based solutions

I found it had vsync enabled by default, which is synonymous with putting a dent in performance. I'm running everything on high with an increased FoV as well, and it rarely stutters, running on 4790K + GTX 780 setup.

I might lower some of the settings though, not because of performance issues, but there's a lot of visual noise and it does funny things around the edge of draw distance. I just need to experiment. It could be a postprocessing issue, but either way, the menus are so horribly console orientated.

I'm not normally scared by games, but I found my first night terrifying. But I've got my flares (portable UV safe zones) and UV torch now, so I should be a bit better off.

4 hours in and loving it

I started it up last night and wow this game requires a bit of a beast of a PC - I am running in 4k with a G-SYNC monitor but i've hit numerous technical bugs such as FPS drops, major stuttering and the game client crashing to desktop. I need more RAM for this game its actually totally maxing me out lol but everything apart from my GFX card is about 5 years old so its due a replacement.

    i7 930

    MSI GTX 980

    4k Acer G Sync Monitor

I've read there already are a few fixes about for some of these issues so i'll try that tonight.

Onto gameplay im literally only like 1-2 hours in but i am enjoying the story so far and it does look extremely purrrty, Once the technical bugs are cleaned up it'll be a tidy game. There is a great atmosphere around this game, walking around the lower levels of the apartment block (the starting area) with the chilling eerie music and long insane asylum looking corridors it really does make you expect somethings gonna jump out at you any moment, which is exactly what you want from a game like this.

Combat feels good but its really hard to tell how smooth it is with the FPS hits im getting, Going to tweak things tonight to hopefully get it to play smooth.

Yes, this game requires a beast of a PC... if you want to run it at 4K. Just like every game requires a beast PC in that scenario atm.

my dad genuinely bought a Titan Z to play Guildwars on his 4K monitor *facepalm* and still suffers FPS issues

Try turning off all the anti-aliasing options. I say all, but I think the menu allows for "on/off"

How much RAM do you have to be maxxing out? do you mean GDDR or DDR? because that 980 should have at least 4GB GDDR available.

Im running it at 1080p with a 144Hz monitor, and while I haven't monitored my FPS yet I've had very little in the way of FPS drops

Haha, The 4k is very nice G-SYNC really does make up for the FPS hit for the jump to 4k.

Yeah i turned off everything and it didnt seem like it was actually changing anything, im not sure the options menu was correctly applying the settings i chose to be honest, i didnt have too much time so i will fiddle about with it some more tonight.

DDR, requirements are 16GB i think... and for some reason im drawing a blank i either have 8 or 16 i really cant remember But i will be upgrading at somepoint anyway.

I'll try the fixes and tweaks tonight and drop the res down to 2.5k if needs be.

Could do some co-op one night if your up for that jackophant? - And anyone else if you want to co-op drop your steam name here

yeah add me on steam at the same name it's the account without any underscores following it

have you tried the companion app yet?

it's quite nifty, you run missions that take x number of minutes, using it's own currency and you can send it into your own game as an air drop for collection (which i have yet to do).

right now all i have is a pitiful amount of money, a medkit and some alcohol to send myself, lol

    Cool, i'll get you added.

No i wasn't aware of a companion App to be honest i'll give that a look if its gonna give me more loot!

Got the GF round tonight but i will be getting some Dying Light in before the night is over, looking forward to see the game turn to night and see the difference in gameplay.

I quite like the survival instinct feature to help you look for items but as i'm now spamming it on a 24/7 basis the noise is getting pretty damn annoying haha

Wasn't the game supposed to be set in Rio? I remember the reveal… then I've seen part of a review and they weren't able to say where is set, now I see that screenshot and wonder whether they changed completely

Judging from the surroundings, names, spellings etc. it would look to be somewhere in the Middle East vicinity. My money's on Turkey as there's a muslim influence, but not very strict. But there is also a distinct lack of mosques.

The asset recycling is pretty bad. I'm fairly sure all the male children are the same Mexican child just being shared around. The environment isn't very coherent and the slums hub would make more sense for Rio. The old city hub is just...

    /me shrugs

Maybe it's just a Turkish Brazilian hybrid and it's not that they can't say where it is, it's that it doesn't exist? Anyone from Techland around here who's brains we could pick?

On a side note, I have really been pumping the hours into this game. The grappling hook is tremendous fun, takes the parkour to a spiderman level. Not a fan of it's 2 shot/cooldown mechanic though. And grenades! Holy crap! Toss a DIY grenade into a large group zombies and watch them turn into a fine red mist. That or pick up a heavy axe, apply an impact mod to it and windmill through open areas of zombies!

I really love this game! I could literally talk about amusing scenarios with weapons/grappling/drop kicking all day. AND double vaulting! If 2 players have the vault ability they can run head on at each other and break physics by both vaulting off each other simultaneously... ok ok ok ok

    Ye, Turkey

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dying_Light#Main_campaign

but when it was presented everyone thought it was set in Rio

"Developed by Techland, Dying Light is a first-person game set in a fictional city that highly resembles Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro, even replicating banners and ads in the city that advertise an upcoming international sporting event"

    http://www.examiner.com/article/e3-201…ons-dying-light

    although was never said so.
