Well, that's the old trailer, so I don't get the complains about the Kinect stuff, when the teaser site underlines that it will be "controller-based gameplay enhanced by kinect"...

I think the trailer does a great job of highlighting exactly why Kinect isn't something we want to see in games like this. I bet almost everyone who watched it thought 'erm no thanks' rather than Microsoft's expectation of 'HOLY SHIT THIS IS THE FUTURE!!!!!'.
I'm sure the game will be great anyway, but it just shows how misguided Microsoft's view of the future is. They really do think Kinect is going to become a fundamental part of mainstream gaming. I really don't think it is, apart from maybe the voice stuff (which hardly requires something as advanced as Kinect).
I hope they come up with more interesting ways of using Kinect than 'wave your body around and your character does it too!'. Things like characters in RPGs responding to the expression on my face might actually impress me and enhance my immersion, swinging my arms around like a tosser won't.

Totally not a fan of Kinect, but that's the direction the new unit is heading to, for what I understand. More precision, to receive input from subtle moves, (emotional) status of the player... so i think that integration with a classic control scheme, could add some value.
For eg I sometimes find myself stretching my neck like if i could get a different point of view in a fixed camera game (like Trials), or I could say that in a game like Batman the camera ends up in a weird spot but you cannot immediately fix it because you cannot move the stick... tracking this kind of things could be a welcomed addition.
Of course the additional dev costs or simply the entry price to have the Kinect is overkill for what seems interesting to do.
Btw I know some people that bought an Xbox toward the end of the cycle just because of Kinect; i tried the sports games and they are a hell of a lot more entertaining to play with/against a friend, than the Wii's.

I'll just leave this here...
*cough* controller-based experience *cough*

Love the Romans so looking forward to this. Glad it is controller based now though.

But don't forgot guys... you ARE the controller!!!!!

I didn't expect this... http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/06/why-ry…ing-game-of-e3/
QuoteDisplay MoreI’m on the battlefield. I’m stomping through the corpses of my comrades swinging my sword at anything that moves. I begin a combo, I slash twice and then whooom slow motion is initiated, shit is about to get ‘cinematic’. A button prompt hovers elusively above the sword I’m about to drive into the throat of my enemy… argh I’m too slow! The prompt flickers, disappears.I missed it. Damn.
But then somehow, for some reason, I still complete the cinematic ‘kill’.
What?
Maybe it’s a bug I think, but no. Next time I deliberately press the wrong button. The kill goes ahead, no consequences. Then I try hitting no buttons whatsoever. The kill goes ahead. I put the controller on the table in front of me, the kill goes ahead.
What is going on here?
I ask one of the Crytek people hovering at the booth – is this a bug? Why am I completing kills when I hit the wrong button prompt? Or, worse, no button at all. Turns out it was a deliberate design choice.
“We don’t want the player to feel frustrated,” I am told.
-
Yeah this game looked pretty nice but those QTEs are completely retarded.
-
I can think of a few games were not doing the QTE still kills the dude but you get less reward. Ex: In Bloodforge you'll always kill the guy, but you miss out on combo hits and currency compared to mashing the button. I'm fairly sure this is how it works in Ryse, but it isn't reported because Kotaku.
I don't mean to defend this either, I think it was pretty rubbish in Bloodforge and the justification was being "casual friendly." Ultimately if your goal is to not frustrate the player maybe consider not having quick-time events because they're shit.
-
Remember seeing this on E3 and i was shocked visually it looks really impressive, love that era too. Those QTE though, after the third or fourth fight i was bored watching it nevermind playing it.

I really like a lot the idea of the swapping arenas!

Me and my collegeau went into the little room where they had two HDTVs. One showed the protagonist in a test level and as soon as i saw it..i told my collegeau...dude....turn around and just look at this thing, just look at it. It had Marius standing in a field of grass, every grass piece moved in the wind and the colours were vibrant as hell and beautiful. The environment looked like a next-gen Oblivion, with the awesome colours and grass fields. They had this test map to show off the improved combat and also how enemies don't just wait around to attack you(like in Assassins creed where they just await their turn) but will actually swarm and corner you. Bit like Batman AA and AC, they don't just stand around and waste time.In this whole presentation we didn't see a single QTE, which is good news. They showed some spear throwing, Marius impaling enemies into obstacles and so on. They showed decapitations of arms and i asked if there will be parts where you can behead folks...cause i like gore in games like these. They said there will be some parts with that. You don't necessarily need to kill folks with executions at all. I also asked if this is just straight up hack and slash or if there will be exploration and climbing too. The guy said there will be plenty of climbing and exploration. And to show that off they showed us a new location, which basically was another test map but graphically just blew me the hell away. It looked a bit like a forest location, dead bodies impaled into objects, beautiful colours, lighting, no grainy shadows, awesome water effects and just insanely pretty.
They gave a bit of info on multiplayer which is basically gladiators in the roman colleseum. There will be death traps and expect a lot of user generated content. There will be a multiplayer progression system, customizing of your character. Purchase items with ingame currence or real. There's a day/night cycle (not sure if for SP too) and beautiful weather effects.
For me and my collegeau without a doubt the best looking next-gen game so far. I honestly did not expect it at all. Best of all...no PC's in sight....only thing in sight was the X1 console with the power light on, and the X1 controller. I asked the dev if these amazing looking test levels will be in the game itself too, similar levels and they responded with....''even better''. They also said that they are currently not yet finished with the graphics cause..get this....they want it to look even prettier!
Ryse is my number one of GC, simple as that. If they truly have exploration, climbing etc in this one with the awesome combat and not just hack and slash...this will be a winner.

i love that IGN focus on the important stuff. integrity!
-
I'm not really interested in the multiplayer anyway, I just want me some epic Roman action. I wouldn't mind there being a mythological element to the game (get to use pretty much the same shit as God of War) but it looks quite realistic which is fine too.

-
I'm getting a bit interested in this, curious to see how it will evolve.
Yeah I'm down for some mythological stuff thrown in, it would make it pretty much like I always imagined the Greek Myths when I read them at young age.
-
To the Mapcoreans working on it: please push for the mp arenas to be playable in sp a-la horde mode if one wants just to quickly bash some gladiators after lunch
