i think its a winner, i mean it looks city 17-ish, but adds a new level of gameplay to the game...i mean it may be a bit linear but then again, arent all maps?

How does it add a new level of gameplay to the game? Calling it a "bit linear" is a real understatement, and above and beyond that, claiming all maps are linear is just ludicrous. In answer to your question, no, they aren't

The map does look great, but if it wins then there will be a lot of pissed off people. In their last contest Valve had the good sense to pick something that is playable (rapidcore) as the winner, so hopefully they will do the same again.

    ^wasnt it datacore?

No, Datacore was made by Valve. Rapidcore was the PHL DM competition winner.

No offense to the map author, but we're all just such a big bunch of hypocrites. If we would see a map like this in Half-Life 1, we'd tell the author that the map plays bad and lags. But not only that, the theme is really unimaginitive as well. We'd tell the author to find himself a more interesting theme, that he sure knows his tricks well, but just should be more creative. I mean, come on, it's just too close to HL2, it's like releasing a Dust map for Counter-Strike or a Supertimor map for The Specialists. Instead, this map is praised for all it's goodness, and it even received the golden pearl of splendor (RD, that totally lost all it's crediblity right now ). My point is, we're all just so blinded by this great new engine, that we lost some of our ability to critisise maps. This map it's made really solid, and the author surely knows all his tricks and used this engine quite well, but because most of us haven't made a kickass map with this engine yet, because most of us don't know all the tricks yet, and because our standard is a bit low right now, that doesn't mean that a map that stands out, is good. Again, no offense, but i just think the critisism was not fair. The maps theme IS unimaginitive, the theme is too close to Half-Life 2 and i think we should all use Mike's map as an example, go and try to do something new, explore the engine and it's possibilities. ESPECIALLY if your map is not for the contest (because then i can see why someone would stick with the HL2 theme) a mapper should try to come up with something interesting, not just something ok looking. It's strange, to me, to see that a map with trains would be trashed in HL1 as a de_train clone, but now receives praise. That's it. Decent map, but nothing special. Skip the train theme and go make something interesting, push the bounds. I'm sure that in a year or so everybody will say the same.

IMO, the spirit of the competition was to make maps in-keeping with the Half-Life 2 theme. Thats why Valve restricted competition maps to all-stock textures, etc. Since this is a competition map you can't really hold it against the mapper for doing a HL2-themed map.

Not sure if anyone has noticed....but the sun is on the wrong side of the map.

quoted for troof. Id have said it was a worthless warehouse map otherwise, but fact is, this is hl2's theme. One thing u have to remember also, even an unoriginal dustclone can be excellent. Originality wears off after 5mins anyway

Yes I have to agree about the theme. The point with the competition is not to make something highly original but a map that stays true to the HL2 universe and has good gameplay. Maps that tend to be too far apart from the HL2 theme will not be accepted since they don't deliver the HL2 expierence in multiplayer.

Hey i don't see this in the HL2DM contest forum but in the WIP level gallery. I think that this map is highly unoriginal, something that does NOT wear off in 5 minutes. RD if you really feel that way you might wanna consider working for EA . Making an ok map like this is all about technique, making something cool and original is just something more. Dustclones can have excellent technique, and can therefor be decent maps. But if you really feel it can be an excellent map overall, then your standards are just not high enough.
