Christ, it's really embarrassing watching the whole Xbox One thing. It's just been a constant series of U-turns and contradiction, and while some are using that as a defence of Microsoft and claiming that they're listening to their fans, it's clear to me that the real reason for it is because there's a complete lack of focused direction and vision on Microsoft's part. They just don't seem to know what they're doing, and it's now gotten to the point where the XBone is basically just the PlayStation 3 with better graphics (I say PS3 because unlike the Xbox 360 that console had very good multimedia capabilities).

I know I'll end up with both, I just wish Microsoft would figure out what the fuck it is they want the XBone to be before they sink the platform. The proof is in the pudding: the PS4 is absolutely annihilating the XBone in terms of sales, and almost every game is coming out in an inferior state on the XBone. It currently has an advantage in that bizarrely its multimedia capabilities are superior to the PS4's (which are a step back from the PS3), but Sony has already committed to bridging the gap and considering that they have their own previous console to draw from I've little doubt it'll soon cease to be an issue.

It's just not looking good, especially considering the whispers within Microsoft about the Xbox division's future. But if Microsoft goes down, who could possibly replace them? At the moment it's becoming a one-console race, with Nintendo not really competing as a new-generation console and no other vendors really positioned to take the gaming market. The Ouya has been a disastrous failure; Apple continues to be antipathetic towards gaming. The only 'console' that could really become a serious contender is the Steam Machine line.

Of course, Microsoft could turn everything round. They have many solid IPs, and as the console is now out they're in a position to make it increasingly affordable. In terms of horsepower it's not that much behind the PS4, so I don't think that will be any kind of factor with the mainstream. I really hope they fix it, because competition is good. Part of me is even tempted to help them out by getting an XBone sooner rather than later.

Very weird things happening in the industry right now.

Well put. Normally I would say the same regarding getting both eventually, but this time I'm seriously thinking that it will not happen. I'm a bit done with Halo and Gears and so far there's nothing for it or coming on the Xbox One that makes me want to get one. I would sooner buy a Wii U if they lower the price

It's just the industry resetting to default. Remember how dominant the PS2 was?

PS2 came out first with an almost 2 years lead in availability. Also is written nowhere that Sony does things better as a general rule. Is not like they had that fierce competition back then - that's how I always saw the console state of the game (but I never really got interested in consoles before last gen).

I would find a new Sony-dominated future pretty scary, they appear quite a lazy and monolithic company to me, with little interest in change. Meanwhile MS have been trying to do things competitors weren't doing, like serious digital distribution, serious motion, serious media center/hub; they might have fucked up, but they've been trying, (involuntarily) giving hints to others in the process - which results in better products for everyone.

My point is that the industry is a lot more familiar with Sony, and I think MS trying new and different things is more of a symptom of them not knowing what they're doing, throwing shit at the wall, not focusing on core things gamers actually care about (i.e. games). Sony has been in the business so much longer, and I think the trust with MS is still not there with developers, why do I get the sense that people are still unsure that MS isn't about to just drop their console division entirely, or try to gobble up the market in a really gross way like they were at one point with indie devs/charging exorbitant rates for updates. The trust level with MS is just low perennially, I feel like its still an issue and thats ridiculous this many years in. Gamers don't seem to trust MS, developers seem wary of them (especially indies), it's a bad situation.

Take a look at the number of titles each system has to offer right now. If you care about GAMES, MS is getting absolutely slaughtered.

You saw it around the time of the XBONE reveal, Sony was just pounding them over the head by repeating what gamers want to hear, instead of MS who were struggling to market features that literally no one cares about (always on kinect for example). The point is that Sony has had a monopoly for a lot longer than MS ever has, and I'm beginning to think the 360 was pretty much a fluke. Sony seems just to get it, substantially more than MS. Obviously they're both big companies capable of making adjustments, but the ball is firmly in Sony's court right now.

I will probably be buying a PS4 when it makes sense to do so. I will not purchase a bone, probably ever. The 360 was a solid console, but I regret siding with it instead of the PS3, especially because later in life it got amazing titles like TLOU exclusively, whereas the 360 just turned into a COD-mobile. Not to mention the 360 was a piece of shit in terms of build quality, and I burned through like 3 of them. If that isn't enough to lose a customer for life, nothing is.

Also the idea that Sony is somehow more monolithic than Microsoft is pretty strange and confusing to me, honestly

Important but not much unexpected here with Nadella's takeover. Re-structuring, reaffirming/shifting marketing goals/guidelines, and costs controls were seen coming down the pipe for months.

Me and my brother bought a Xbone. Its cool i like the snap feature, but the thing freaks me out. Its in my room and when going to bed It turns on for no reason. it doesn't make the sound that it makes when you hit the button or say "xbox on". I'm really weirded out by it i swear it's watching me sleep. (im not kidding it really turns on for no reason!)

So, the sucker I am then I bought an Xbox One (cuz Forza Horizon 2 fpfpfp), but already 3 clicks into the initial console setup flow then I'm in awe of the complete ineptitude shown from Microsoft; You are simply unable to select say, Denmark as your country, and then use English as a language. The only way to select English as a language is to set England as your country, which apparently makes it impossible to buy stuff with your credit card unless you have an English credit card. This is still a thing even a year after launch, and people have been raging about it on the Xbox forums since day one, with the fix being that you have to set your country to England and then switch back whenever you have to buy anything.

I have no idea what kind of drugs they must've been taking to actually go in and change this from the 360, where it worked perfectly, but apparently Microsoft figures that no one that buys an Xbox One might live in for example Germany but not actually speak German, surely that scenario doesn't exist.

    Fucking amazing.

Well, I'm pretty much only going to be using it for Xbox exclusives anyway, with the PS4 serving as the main console. Though this perhaps isn't a huge problem as such then it just highlights how aimless and misguided they've gone into this generation, there's plenty of small annoying things they've changed into something worse from the 360 and it just paints a sad picture of them not having any clue as to what made the 360 fucking rock (or more accurately, all the people that knew their shit in the previous generation probably left ages ago).

It does sound like they've been patching in a lot of old 360 features over the last year, but it's just sad that this is how they've started off.

    Anyway, TV TV TV
