I'm not saying you can't make a good story focused Doom game. I'm just saying that it wouldn't really be a Doom game. A lot of these modern game designers fail to grasp what made Doom great in the first place. Now I'm all for good stories, epic journeys and then some but Doom wasn't about that. The greatest thing about Doom was that it was utterly unpretentious. It didn't need a deep narrative, epic set pieces or great character progression. No, Doom was about demons and shotguns. The game was entirely build around action. Everything else was secondary. From the level design to the items you picked up, everything was there to support your merciless onslaught and it all flowed very naturally. But it's not about the shooting either. Even the weapons are just tools. No, the game centers around fast paced movement. The challenge is not about shooting your enemies but surviving long enough to be able to do so. There are no useless items, nothing to break immersion, everything helps you in combat and it's just one long adrenaline rush battling for survival. If they can bring just a fraction of that back then I'm sold!
This is Doom. There is no room for dumb story in Doom. No dumb modern day bollocks. You hold down mouse1 and destroy everything.

Too bad you have to wait a couple of weeks to see what the gameplay is all about, but I'm pretty sure you will like it.
Quote from jackophantI liked the horror direction Doom 3 and spin offs took. I never played the originals, but were they meant to be action / horror / what? I was never too sure.
Jibers crabts dude... grab Doom 1 and install brutal doom to make it less of a jarring experience and you can thank me later. Also, saying you never played Doom in a game dev forum is like going to a star wars convention and telling everyone you never seen the original! xD
I'm IMMENSELY hyped for this, loved every single Doom. Even Doom 3, it stands as one of the most inspirational games I've ever played in my life, mostly for the world setting and less on the gameplay side, like Thrik said, after a while the level design does start to get a little bit stale and repetitive.
This is one of those games I'd actually schedule a day off to stay home and play, looking forward to see more BJA! Also send my regards to everyone in there, you guys must be stoked to show this next month!!
I never finished D3, but I am still planning to go through it.
I liked a lot the exploration, I mean environment was very detailed.
I had a thing for reading all the emails, they were silly, but they made me immerse in the facility more.
Now every time I send an email on my workplace, I'm imagining it could be a good filler for a game lol
I'm sorry guys, I only started playing games around Quake 2, and used to love watching my dad play before that. The original Dooms just never crossed my path.
Also, not to put the game down at all, but a large element of your love for it will be nostalgia and it's harder for someone who doesn't have those fond memories to necessarily enjoy playing an older game like this.
I played the easter egg in wolfenstein: new world order, does that count? ![]()
Games like Wolfenstein and Doom I played with my dad, one was controlling direction, the other shooting. Then with HL and the mouse we had to abandon the partnership ![]()
I still play the original Doom and Hexen. Not out of nostalgia but because they are great games. Even decades later. You have the Doomsday engine which is like a Steam for old Doom engine titles. Modern controls, updates, mods, wads, multi player, console, etc. It has everything.
You can find it here: http://dengine.net/
Alright, let's start the betting pool: Will The Doom/Do4m start with a cutscene, or just drop you into a map?
Fuck yea! That teaser was maybe one of the "teasiest" of them all (could be also because DooM is one of those games I play ever year, with Brutal Doom or without, doesn't matter, it's fucking great game)!

You are no true Doom-er until you've played Sunder on UV.
I'm glad they rebooted this Doom:

Wait... what?
Also, this gave me a bit of a giggle:
Doom3 was the scariest video game I've ever played. I screamed so hard in the house while encountering the first npc of the game that my parents my brother and my sister came in my room to see if everything were alright. Then I couldn't play the game alone. I was a pussy.
It looks like a pretty damn good game just should be under a different name.
It kinda looks like what modern Fallout game should.
Talking about the leaked Doom4 content.
lol@guitar, wtf?
stfu and play doom 1 and 2.
