I think everyone had way to high expectations. Throwing an excessive amount of money at a person doesn't magically turn into quality, it's still a one man (lol) team.

I think she only asked for $6000 did she not? But she got a hundred times that amount... That doesn't necessarily mean you have to use up all that money, or is there a legal clause on kickstarter that says otherwise?

That's an entirely separate discussion really, but I did say (earlier in this thread I think) that Kickstarter should definitely have processes for managing transparency of how extra funds will be used. Some people who might not be particularly wealthy back a project because they believe in it. For those people it must be really frustrating if the project then earns way over what it required, and there's no clear indication of where that extra money will go — maybe an extra holiday for the project owner, who knows?

One idea I had was to allow backers to withdraw their funds on a first-come, first-served basis if the Kickstarter goes above its target; once the funds fall back down to the target level the feature becomes unavailable again. This'll allow those who don't have so much spare cash to take their money back when the project owner clearly doesn't need it. I guess people could already do this, I don't know how Kickstarter handles someone cancelling their payment or if it's even possible.

In Anita's case it's not such a big deal, she did promise to put the extra funds into making better-quality videos (although the results of that are arguable compared to her older videos). But you might have heard of another big Kickstarter controversy this week, where a woman put up a Kickstarter for like $900 to get her daughter sent to game design school. Because it hit the headlines she ended up with $20,000+, and then people started thinking "Wait a minute..." because they couldn't figure out where all that extra money would go and the project owner made no effort to clarify matters.

Then to make matters worse it turned out the woman was quite wealthy, and freely admitted she didn't really need the funds, but thought it'd be a cute idea. It then naturally turned into a fiercely abusive internet backlash, reducing the woman to tears after countless death threats, etc. So a horrible turnout, but one that Kickstarter's lack of a proper way of dealing with this caused IMO.

Man, you really have to put up with a lot of shit for wanting to make videos about this.

when this Kickstarter happened and has now done a video response to Anita's part 1. She's generally more positive than the other responses I've seen and her music choice is made of pure nostalgia. Her main focus is less about aggressively picking apart her assumptions and bad evidence, and more arguing that being a 'damsel' doesn't automatically mean you're a powerless MacGuffin.
