One of my first multiplayer games i played was Quake 2

maybe some of you still know the map q2dm1 The Edge, i played it for hours back in the days. I think it is/was one of the best multiplayer maps made. So when i heared HL2 dm was coming out, i thought to do a remake of this map for the source engine.

I never touched hammer map editor so this is my first map with it but i learn fast .

I started this map from scratch (no decompilers).

I made a little website with some comparison screenshot from HL2 <-> Q2:

    (little screens are clickable)

    C&C welcome.

I adored that map, great with 2 players or 16.

Looks like a decen recreation of it, personally speaking though, I'd like to see a bit more colour injected into it, which I realise is a bit tricksy with the HL2 texture set, but it is very, very grey at the moment. As von ferret said, lighting would also go a long way to making this look spiffy.

Yeah, geometry looks fine, but white lighting should never be the sole lighting. I know Quake 2 was renowned for its browness, but still, you've lost some of the warmth that made The Edge pleasing on the eyes. Try making the main lighting subtle yellows and complimentary oranges, with small dashes of red for highlights, and then perhaps save whites and blues for entirely different areas where you want to promote a calmer feeling.

    Ah really nice idea.

That map was truely amazing playing some q2 dm on

As the others said. Try getting some more fun colours in your lighting.

    Otherwise great job.

One of the best DM maps of all time.

Looks like a pretty good remake, just get to work on the lighting

i mean for the fluorescent lights, in lockdown sample map they used spot lights for that

I'm curious how you're going to place the weapons. What will be in the railgun spot? or the machinegunspot (since you start with a machinegun already..)

Obviously the chaingun = pulse rifle..

What about the mega health..just gonna leave that nothing, or will you make a way to get up there and put something there?

first off, let me say i like hl2dm non-sequitur maps.

I like the outside, but the indoors are extremely simple and boring. They have no character.

PS: its an SMG foo strait outa compton

Ah, that they did. Depends on the area you're lighting really.

hehe, i actually had the excact same idea, but the map got deleted when my STEAM folder went FUBAR after i installed SP2 on my windows XP..

well, you said you the outside there needed some work, try replacing the sorrounding cliffs around with something else, too me, that gets to repetitive and looks like a short way out. But what can be a cliff, is that stair moving up from the outside, up into that higher ground and into the door (the higher ground can still be concrete or whatever, but the road leading up, can be terrain, i remember i did it this way )

You've forgotten about the water in bunker entrance spices stuff a little up there, i think...

make the map brighter, its too dark for a fast paced fps map for me..

also, remove that fence in picture1, its in my standard bunnyjumping route, dont make me change it

    its a classic one ;D

    nice work, keep it up..

its really nice work if this truly is your first map!

well i've been asking myself the same question when i began with it

because q2 has far more guns then hl².

i think the 357 will be the rail gun spot also the crossbow for the grenade launcher and under the stairs maybe some ammo

Also the rocket launcher in hl² does far more damage than in q2 and there are 2 rockets launchers in the map bit overpowered

also i thought to replace the mega health with a charger like in the lockdown map

i know there isn't allot of detail thats because if you stand on the little balcony with the long window and look at the direction of that room fps drops hard, i'm trying to use some aeroportals but its very hard to trigger them open and close them in such open area's

Did some experimenting with dust particles in hallway:

    http://%7Boption%7D[Blocked Image: http://users.skynet.be/bk290440/hl2/wip1.jpg]

I know its dark but i'm gonna add some more lights

All my point_spotlight's were dynamic when i turned dynamic off, i got 70 fps more so i can add some more detail now
