which isn't a bad thing at all.

    This.

Yeah I've seen that Sony headset, but as you said it's a bit pricey for most consumers. I'm more than happy for something to come and blow the rift out of the water, at the end of the day we'd get a better product! It's a good start though!

Haha this gave me a chuckle:

Screw you guys. Why would I want to go to the cinema with you to see a movie?

I tried the Rift the other day and I really enjoyed it. It was a bit weird at first but I soon got to grips with it. I tried the rollercoaster demo and I literally felt vertigo. Never thought I'd get that from a game. Great stuff.

I tried it 2 weeks ago at the office as well. The resolution is absolutely horrible, I doubt they'll be able to fix it completely in the consumer version :s

I didn't really feel vertigo in the rollercoaster demo but it was very disorienting, never before have I felt that In fact, a couple minutes later I was still drowsy, it seriously messes with your brain but you'll probably get used to it. I never EVER feel motion sickness by the way but I wouldn't really describe it like that either, just... disorienting, if that makes sense

The 3D works flawlessly, very awesome!

It's promising tech, but at this point I'm still somewhat skeptic... At the very least it'll kick start more headsets in the future

That virtual cinema in particular looks awesome, nothing beats seeing a movie on the big screen with almost no peripheral vision around you to distract you, complete immersion

I have the rift sitting in my room collecting dust atm, because this thing just blows it out of the water. I tried it at GDC... sure its not as cheap and 'consumer grade' as the rift is, especially with the Sony headset, but it's just proof that someone's going to come around and probably bury oculus rift pretty hard.

Isn't the only reason for the Sony headset being so much better that they used more expensive technology? Or are there any design decisions that makes the Sony headset inherently better?

What I'm basically interpreting from your post is that someone other than Oculus will offer a similar priced product, but that is vastly superior for some reason. I haven't tried either yet and I'm not really familiar with VR or the difference between the headsets (other than resolution/performance etc.).

Finally tried one today. Pretty cool, but the resolution/dpi on the display was shockingly low, at least needs to be about 4x times as high for it to be really effective. Sat with it on for about 8 minutes on the Tuscany demo and got pretty wild with my movements, but didn't feel nauseous at all, but that's probably also one of the most calm demos

I think its mostly a matter of supply+demand and analyzing the market. Sony probably marked theres up so high because of limited production and there isn't any footing in the market so they can really make whatever price they want.

if they gauge major consumer interest at the price point oculus rift is trying to offer, i'm sure they could get something of done of better quality.

i really cannot stand the fish eye lenses. They make me really sick. There needs to be actual peripheral monitors made within the headset, no faked through a shader....

I can already imagine large people posting videos of themselves using this, with their bodies tightly wedged into the ring.

One of the guys at work doesn't like roller coasters. So naturally we put him on one in the rift...

That's his genuine reaction. Before this he took it off before it reached the top because he couldn't handle it.

I don't know if you guys know epicbattleaxe, but this is a bi-weekly podcast that I follow for around a year now and I love it.

On todays ep they have a pretty casual, curious and interesting discussion about the rift, I actually learned that you HAVE to calibrate your your Inter-Pupillary Distance otherwise prepare to spend a good two to three days feeling queasy and sick because it's such a realistic experience for the brain, if it's not calibrated correctly it may make you very sick.

Another interesting aspect about is your height, if you're a short guy for instance, in HL2 you're gonna feel like you're 2m tall and that's a very disorienting feeling for your brain as well, ahah. (In the future, all games will most likely ask you to input your own real world height to avoid this issue)
