why dont you guys make a forum or something of the sort where people can release the vmf files of their maps....open sourcercizing your maps....of course it will invite tons of noobs but 1/10 will learn something and might be one of the great mappers of all time omg! (and they'll always remember you)

How does this belong in the Finished Work Gallery though?

I don't think such a forum would be popular.

Example maps highlighting a specific technique + a written companion tutorial = good.

Open source maps = bad. If people have the relevant skills, they won't need to have other people's vmfs. All that can possibly come from this is plagiarism.

I think the tutorial forum could be nice add to these forums. I'm willing to write basic Hammer tutorials... anyone else interested?

I remember emailing scary one and asking him for an .rmf back when I first started mapping umpteen years ago. He sent me two .rmfs (for outcry and enraged iirc) and it helped me immensely in terms of learning good mapping practices and developing some style. Top bloke. He was a mapping God and an inspiration to me when I started. Nothing much has changed in that respect I guess.

scary_1 and scary_2 were two of the most God damn beautiful maps ever created for the HL engine.

Ever since then I've done the same when asked for .rmf files for my maps.

P.s. I see he's signed up for Source: AG and look forward to seeing what he creates.

Might be an OK idea. I mean, people can just open up any Doom3 map and do whatever they want with it wheather you like it or not, and so far there hasn't been any problems..

I'm just worried about people seeing some crappy work that you wouldn't notice in-game

I released dm_fairytales with the coresponding rmf file and I've had no problems, but I doubt many people even looked at it. I think people should release their stuff as they feel fit and comfortable with rather than the community pressuring eachother to release source files. Once dm_rebar and my other map are submitted for the competition, I plan to release their vmf's also.
