Yeah I'm not gonna bother playing DayZ again until they add in vehicles and stuff. At the moment there just isn't any "end-game" content. It was great with SA first came out since it ran so much smoother than the mod and it was nice to explore the new towns. Now let me fix up a helicopter and scare bambi's with it please!

How playable is the game atm? Zombie movement, spawning, netcode, stability? Last time I played it felt that SA might become a perpetual beta.

To detail, after some months without playing it, I was talking to a friends about Survival games and i wanted to try again and see what they enhanced this the game...

1 year after release on steam early (dec 13, 2013), it's still the same game :

    - netcode is horrible : player sliding instead of walking, lags, items drop far from player location, delay when trying to use inventory... etc...

    - Dayz, is more Day. There is no zombies and the pathfinding noes not exist : they run throught walls and buildings, faster then you, they hit you successfully when you can barely hit them with a melee weapons (yesterday, i fought for 10 minutes vs a Z, with a shovel... he killed me.)

    - Huge fps drops in cities, even the smallers. Fps are fine in green plains, but drops really low in cities (The only other game who is giving me low fps like that is Arma 3, in Huge cities, in multiplayer, with poorly optimized missions)

    - inventory is a pain in the ass... I found a shotgun with 2 round per reload, but with tons of ammo in my inventory : I don't know why, but the devs had the clever idea to force you to open your inventory > drag and drop ammo to your gun and select "reload", in order to reload your weapon. Where others games simply require to press "R".

    - controls are still bad, even if i'm an arma player, the controls and camera lack a lots of polish and rework. Looting a building is so annoying...

But. Some locations are really nice to look at with good mood (weather, lighting, sounds, etc...), you can really feel like you are roaming in a lost world.

Too bad the game is broken at 90%. For a game that grabs millions of $ in early access, this is a shame & and one of the biggest joke of video game history.

I can look past all the things you listed there except the broken zombies running through walls and spots you from a kilometer away, takes 40 hits with any melee weapon to kill. Would be nice if they could just disable the zombies untill they are working properly. It's still in early access though, so I can wait a little longer

though they are implementing new pathfining, you can read the update blog or steam log : http://dayzdev.tumblr.com/post/859193547…bie-pathfinding

Hope it will work this time.

Noice, I love the survival aspects of the game though, excited for hunting and crafting.

Alright this is it, the game is filled with hackers.

After being shot through a wall inside of a building, and being chased by a guy teleporting himself. I was bambying around with a crowbar, and i met a fresh spawn without anything on him. I've been friendly and all, gave him food and the guy started chasing me barefisted.

Awesome, so i ran for about 1 km with him at my back thinking he would give up, but he didn't !!

So i took my crowbar, had a fight, hit him like 10 times in whatever part of his body, and he still wasn't going down. So i decided i will run and he will give up rather than bleed to death. And i shit you not, he was looking like a fucking blood fountain and i ran almost 5 kms with the guy on my back !! Then he punched me to death, laughed and insulted me in english with a little and high preteen voice.

    GOD.

I think you might have a better experience if you join some online forum or community and play on their servers. Tend to be more moderated and some of them have whitelists.

So apparently they are moving DayZ over to a new engine called Infusion (never heard of it). Dean Hall did an AMA over at Reddit and here are his responces.

    Quote

u/twelvecount: Do you see yourselves beefing up your staff to tackle the other aspects of the game like vehicles and base building in the way that you handled the hunting and zombie AI pathing?

Rocket: So that is what we have been doing over the last three months. It is one of the reasons that development had seemed like it had slowed. The studio is now about 160 people we had a team building event last weekend. It is kind of crazy to see everyone in one spot. I guess the big news that we’ve been telling here at E3 is that we’re actually moving to a new engine. It is called infusion. So that is going to allow us to do DirectX 10 and 11. It is going to allow us to do dynamic lighting, which means no more flashlights going through walls, proper dynamic shadows, stuff like that. So it really kind of opens a lot of possibilities for us and I think it is going to allow us to deal will a lot of those issues. We had to decide, did we want to do a lot of little short term fixes or did we want to focus on the architecture. Given the success of the early access we felt like we really had to invest in the future.

Q: With the new engine is it based on your current tech or is it a complete rip out of everything and rewriting it?

Rocket: It is a complete rip out of everything, but we’re definitely leveraging existing tech. So if you look at Bohemia as a studio they actually acquired a great number of other studios, so really were kind of looking around and taking up tech that is available there and mixing it into the engine, rewriting new stuff from scratch that we want to do as well.

Q: When are you looking at getting the new engine into experimental and then pushed out to stable.

Rocket: It will kind of come in a modular fashion over time.

    Rest of the questions here:

It's a good move since the ARMA 2 engine seems to really be limiting DayZ. But I can't help but feel they should have moved to a new engine from the start. I mean ARMA 3 came out quite a bit before DayZ SA, I never understood why they didn't at least move onto the ARMA 3 engine.

Still, I'm interesting to see where they go with this.

Edit: My bad, should read a bit further in the comments before posting. It's not a new engine, they've just added so much to the old engine that it's no longer recognisable as the same engine so they're giving it a name.

When DayZ started - we took the source from the existing RV Engine - Over the last many months, extensive clean up, new functionality, and so forth has been created for that engine - while at the same time, vast amounts of it were removed, or rewritten entirely. The changes Dean spoke of entail major leaps forward in that work, with those changes and the many more that will come through out development - we have begun to approach the point in which DayZ's engine is so no longer recognizable as RV, and because of that - and the massive work to come, it is now known by its own name, Infusion.

All i see is "big new : no news".

Reddit is harsh, but i guess they deserves it... They should have throw this engine from start. Giving it a new name wont fix performance issues and gameplay issues.

25 minutes ago"Oh, so it's just the modded RV engine. Got it. Thanks for clarifying. A more representative name would have been RVZ or something similar, but I understand why, from a marketing perspective, you would want to appear as if you're going to an entirely different engine. After all, RV does not exactly have the best reputation among FPS engines."

    >>> Imo, RVI sounds better, I for infected because they are not zombies. DH was clear about it. that's why they are shitty coded.

    Extrapolation :

I guess they chose a shitty short term solution rather than a long term one because they had to get something done before the concurrence to get the customers when the hype was on.

Now the dev team is stuck because of the decisions of their bosses who actually made the best business oriented choices. The people on the dev team who care about the quality of their work are now angry and depressed (especially the juniors who would have liked a quality game on their cv) because they now have to find a way to get over the mess when they could have done so much better to keep the reputation of the company clean and the future customers not suspicious. Of course they can't say anything publicly while under contract. Even after TBH, it's not well seen.

Well if you worked in the videogame industry, you know very well what it is.

edit : i feel so disagreeable saying those things.

That's a shame, really wish they get it on tracks, this game has so much comedy potential.

This evening i had fun ambushing a single guy looting innocentely at balota and played this into the mic :

I had so much fun seeing him freeze and a few seconds later suddenly and desperately run for cover before all hell breaks loose.

They were only like 5-6 people when they started working on the stand alone version, so it would make no sense for them then, to be doing what they are doing now. They've been on the top selling list on steam for almost 9 months now, which has given them a lot more resources to ramp up production. It will take longer, but improve the quality of the end product.
