I don't understand the fuss? It's just a new interface... right? People have been using their TV's instead of their monitors and playing with controllers for years.

I guess I could do the same since I live in a studio and my desk is right next to my TV. Guess that would enhance my Skyrim experience

Well, yeah but now you have the support and a proper platform for that instead of working around issues that shouldn't be there in the fist place and "hack" a HDTV as your primary monitor on there, now you're gonna have a UI thought out for what you are doing.

This is actually very good news for me, as in the last couple years my gaming has been more and more heading towards the couch instead of on my desk since I already spend 9 hours a day on a desk.

This reminds me, I must order a XBox pad from Amazon! Fuck yeah, I'm pretty stoked about this.

Now I just need to find a good long HDMI cable.

The interface in itself is a huge thing. There's definitely increasing demand for playing PC games on a TV, and Valve is clearly timing things well so they're offering the perfect platform to make that happen. I myself used a gaming PC with my TV for a couple of years before I had to cannibalise its innards for my desktop workhouse, and while playing PC games on my TV with a 360 controller was sometimes incredible it was also often a frustrating and fiddly experience, and using regular Steam in such a way is horrible.

There's also something to be said for the kind of foundation this gives Valve in terms of producing a console. They've made no secret of the fact that they're investing lots of resources into Linux and hardware development, so is it too much of a stretch to imagine Linux-based consoles (whether it's a single one or a whole line of them) running Steam and whatever games are compatible with it? While it might seem hard to imagine, with Windows 8 set to seriously fuck things up (IMO) and Valve keen to push people towards Linux, it's more possible than ever before that PC gaming might eventually become associated primarily with Linux rather than Windows or OS X.

Does anyone know if there is an easy fast way to turn on/off an extra pc screen? I'd hate having to go into Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Display\Screen Resolution every time to setup my projector as an extra screen.

I have had my TV set as a second monitor for a long time now and it works pretty well. Once it is set up it is just plug and play (HDMI) and understands when the TV is on or off (and same with the monitor). In my case I just have the TV as a clone display of the monitor. If I am understanding you correctly...

Yeah I guess this opens up the possibility of creating your own steam box (and maybe selling it?).

Create a small hardware box (kind of like boxee) with a custom linux installed that has steam installed and boots steam first thing.

Then we have our steam box.

Windows key + P works fast

Unless I didn't understand the concern

If you got more devices hooked up to it then a AVR receiver works excellently!

I just have to press the key for PC and then it duplicates automatically.

Haha yeah... I found out about that shortcut a few months back. As a person who switches between screens ALOT, man was I pleased...

That's what I'm most interested to find out. Having Steam on Linux is a pretty exciting prospect!

Tried it out for a min, super sleek interface, and so fast to boot/navigate

Now I need to find a USB-bluetooth adapter to be able to use the wireless ps3-controller with the pc. This is awesome.

Oh? They support PS3 pads too?

Gave it a quick try here at work, the interface is perfect! Really nice and sleek.

tried it out at home as well. VERY impressed! super sleek interface, installing games is really fast too. Any game that has default controller options make the whole thing feel like I have a new console at home .I really need to get a wireless controller for this as well.

It would be cool if steam would auto enable controller setups if you launch through steamTV. Would be great to just launch quake or so and it runs with the controller

just tried it out too... really cool indeed!

I think something like you mentioned is definitely in the pipeline: it feels like a logical next step

    Impossibru!

Seriously, I don't really see how unless they patch quake.
