STALKER devs closed down?

Seriously like the worst news ever.

Crytek snatched up Free Radical as they were dying- wonder if they'll respond to GSC? I think that, despite the gameplay focus of the Crysis games, Crytek could make a STALKER game if they wanted to. Interesting scenario to think about (not that I have any real hope it happens)

I don't want to be the devil's advocate but it's not unreasonable that the game actually did have some development issues and that understandable reasoning, but perhaps not just reasoning (as in correct), lead to this decision.I don't know about you but I remember all STALKER-games being quite buggy and, unless I'm speaking out of my own ass here, console releases can't get away with that as easily as PC releases due to Sony/MS. Perhaps no publisher thought they could pull it off? And that merely relying on PC sales didn't cut it? Furthermore, the development of STALKER 1 wasn't really smooth and all subsequent games have been derivatives IMHO (easier to develop due to tech/asset-sharing). It's not a good pitch for any publisher with dollarbills in their eyes.

Harsh business. Sad ending.
That concept art really got me pumped too

Well...yeah. I was at THQ back in core of STALKER dev...even product managed it from the marketing side for a while in the US. It was a really tough and long development cycle. GSC was extremely ambitious and at the time, no one had ever attempted a survival shooter like that. Most of us on the pub side believed in it but GSC was having a tough time getting everything together given their ambitions. In the end though, despite the delays and the bugs, I think the game was still an outstanding game up there with Half-Life in terms of how much I'll remember it and how much it impacted my perspective of what a game could be.
I'm really bummed about the STALKER 2 news and it sounds like it is dead.
...but I still believe this is not the end.

There are rumors that GSC was getting pressured for a cut by semi-legit organizations in the Ukraine. Shit's weird.

I'm *hoping* that when Metro Last Light is released, 4a Games could do a "3D Realms/Gearbox" deal and actually finish the game but that would likely only work if the game was almost finished which I highly doubt...
Izuno is right.. WE MUST HAVE FAITH COMRADES! sorry.

After seeing their concept art I must say that I have mixed feelings about them being closed down... maybe for the better lol

Not all of the concept art is that great I'll admit but then that's the case with Uncharted 2's concept art... it's concept art, it's not supposed to be an accurate representation of what will definitely be in the game...
These are awesome imho.

So they are dead. Gaming is shit.
QuoteLATEST UPDATE: GSC’s twitter this morning announced there will be an official statement on Monday.1c Ukraine’s Sergey Galenkin has blogged about the closure of GSC. He states: “GSC is closed, a fact confirmed by all. The team is almost completely dissolved, the state has only a few people.” Galenkin blames the cost of developing a PC only shooter for a European audience, and a failed console publishing deal, for the collapse of the developer.
Developing a PC title for a euro audience, lolz?

That's why most developers are always very sceptical when it comes to release concept art. Because concept art is often just made to aid a 3d artist in trouble, quick paint overs for reference and inspiration, and you need to know the context, etc.

This news is so saddening. Out of any game I've ever played, STALKER has taken up the most hours and provided the most fun. I wish the employees all the best, and can only hope at some point STALKER will resurface.

Woah woah woah...
QuoteThe Stalker team continues work on the project and hopefully everything will turn out well. Good Hunting Stalkers!

I'm confused, why do they play with my emotions like this?

This is not good news really... why you ask?
Let's talk about this in 4-5 years from now lol

QuoteNewsbrief: GSC Game World said it's still at work on a sequel to the cult PC hit Stalker, but it needs funding in order to bring the game to completion. The official Stalker Facebook account revealed yesterday, "The Stalker team is extremely happy! Why? Because we are continuing work on Stalker 2 after the holidays." GSC spokesperson Oleg Yavorsky later told Edge-Online, "We are still in the process of seeking funding to back up the project. We are hopeful things turn out well eventually. The team really wants to see Stalker continue."
The statements follow reports that GSC would be closing its doors.
