About to be hit by a hurricane guys wish me luck

In one day, starting at around 2AM sunday morning, going on for about 12 hours, I'm gonna be underneath Hurricane Irene as it heads up the atlantic coast. Just a couple days ago we had our first noteworthy earthquake in a century and now we get a once in a century hurricane over us. Hopefully the hurricane goes as easily as the earthquake did (my couch just wobbled back and forth for a couple seconds).

This does however give me a great excuse to stay in the weekend and play Deus Ex (assuming my power stays on).

My place isn't built withstand jack SHIT. It's about 80 years old and Pennsylvania doesn't get earthquakes or hurricanes or tornados or any shit like that. We get mild floods sometimes, and that's it. My house doesn't even have shutters, just storm windows.

Also no generator. This is kinda a short notice hurricane, very inconsiderate.

With nine hours to go, the reports for the local weather is looking like 50-70mph winds and heavy rain from midnight to 6AM local time, sunday morning. Predicting lots of downed trees and power lines.

Going without power sucks At least the pump in my basement to protect against flooding has backup batteries.

I'm 23 and this WEEK had my first earthquake and hurricane.

I can't afford to run. No car, and they shut down public transportation, and the outer edge of the hurricane goes all the way to harrisburg, over two hours' drive away (if I could drive).

I've made a giant crock pot full of beans/rice/beef for cooked food during the potential power outage (my stove uses electricity to spark fires for the burners, but I can circumvent that with matches to reheat stuff). Put plastic sheets over the bigger windows, like the living room bay window. I'm feeling confident.

Also apparently the last time any hurricane at all hit our area was in 1989, 22 years ago. Power was off for seven days. Hopefully this time shit goes better.

I'm in a suburb area in PA, surrounded by tons and tons of old trees.

So yeah that pretty much went as easily as the earthquake did for me. Just had to clean up a few fallen branches in my yard. My lights flickered very very briefly at like 3AM. That was it. Closer to bodies of water, like inside Philadelphia, shit was way worse (In Philly there were cars getting flipped from the storm surge up the Delaware river and stuff like that), but here it was just lots of rain, and a tiny bit of wind.

Overall, though, the hurricane was pretty entertaining (ignoring the death and destruction, of course). It brought us things like this:

Raw sewage. Massive storm surges tend to mess up the sewer system (and boardwalk towns tend to be incredibly filthy and have pipes dumping into the ocean anyway). Dude was complaining about the taste of shitfoam.
