The art direction change basiclly saved the game from being utter crap, the assets just look bad.

That and the last good gearbox games are the half-life expansions.

Brothers in Arms was good. Can't say that I really look at Gearbox as being a bastion of high-quality game development any more, though. They need to pull out something seriously hot to make up for the assault on peoples' goodwill that were Duke and Alien, or their reputation is basically toast.

I only played HL expansions and Brothers In Arms from Gearbox. Road To Hill 30 was really beautiful*. Earned In Blood felt /meh and I didn't finished it.

Maybe I should try it, but i was never attracted by the Borderlands gameplay (AI seems to be cannon fodder)... that was sad because I really followed it since the announce and really digged the art style when the switch happened.

I find curious that from their pov they "risked to look like Rage and Fallout", but at the time in the Italian forum everyone was saying that Rage was a Borderlands rip-off

*Complicated relationship with that game: it is the first game I ever pre-ordered and I went so far to buy the collector's edition, just to find that the game wasn't running smoothly on my ATI, which pissed me off beyond any measure because other Unreal Engine games were running perfectly and BiA didn't look better. So I sold the game (luckily the Tin Box with bonus material was a separate thing - so i kept it). Then when I got a new computer someone passed me a pirate copy of the game, I played it and since it was now running perfectly, I bought again the standard retail to keep in my collection

I think borderlands is a really great idea because I like FPS's and love RPG's. I just think the execution was horrible. To me the physics were really floaty and the world just felt flat. Kind of like an empty MMO. I dont know why though. I have a couple of friends (who's taste I trust) that absolutely loves the game, so there must be something I'm missing. I didn't play it for long though...

Did you play it with friends? I did and it was pretty fun after the first hour

so that's the trick, I couldn't get past the first hour no matter how entertaining it was (claptrap is awesome) soon as I got into combat it was just way too hard and I rage quite multiple times

looking back, I think the game is fine, I just get bored of shooters these days

What? Were you fighting stuff like 30 times above your level?

You need to play Borderlands2 for at least 4/5 hours to REALLY get into the the game, same applies to all RPG's tbh, if you play Oblivion or Skyrim for only an hour you would have no idea what the game really is all about.

Borderlands2 is a great game, I know some people love it so much it was GOTY for them. For me it was OK, it does a lot of interesting things right, and I love how the shooting feels, probably one of the smoothest games I've played. But just like Chris I need more essence, I've been playing FPSs since I can remember and fun shooting alone is not enough to sell me. (Still, I played some good 35 hours of the game)

Still, lemme repeat, you need to force yourself to play at least a few hours to be able to really judge an RPG.

Also, I believe Borderlands franchise would do a great MMORPG FPS! Borderlands2 co-op is so unbelievably fun you have to play it to believe it, now imagine with a world full of real people! Drools!

Yeah that's true. For my first few hours of Skyrim I was like 'this is a bit boring'. Then after I broke several hours in and started arriving at sweet locations and discovering random awesome places and realising how vast yet full of life the world was ... that was basically the last time my girlfriends and colleagues saw me.

I guess, but skyrim, mass effects and dragon age all hooked me from the start, as I said, it's a shooter, then an RPG ... tbh the term RPG has been thrown around all over the place, I think borderlands is the closest to one in the shooter space, but it's far away from what I consider an rpg. It could also be the pace of it, really fast and unforgiving, just not my thing anymore

Playing with friends definitely made the experience more fun. Towards the end of our play session we were having a blast fighting and dying to robots. I was playing the ninja dude, and his one liners are the cheesiest shit ever, which just made it even more hilarious.
