Wall Street Journal: "Borderlands 2 fails to cross over"

Hating on claptrap? That's cold, bro.

Borderlands 2’s single-player campaign mode isn’t as good as what you’ll find in games like COD: Black Ops or the Medal of Honor series. There’s too much “feast-or-famine” hunting for tasks, supplies and a good battle for this to be a fun game all the way through.

And Borderlands 2 misses on enough counts so that I not only didn’t joy puke, I didn’t even get a tiny bit of mirthful bile in my throat. It may be the game for you, but if you’re in the market for a new FPS, I’d at least counsel waiting to compare it to Black Ops 2, due out Nov. 13, or Halo 4, which is slated for a Nov. 6 release.

    Here's the link.

    Well, I like BL2!

I read it and I got brain cancer from this guy.

because it’s missing several key elements you need to have in a 2012 first-person shooter game – most notably, a rich multiplayer online mode. There’s an extremely limited four-player cooperative mode

    Waaaaaaaaaat.

Almost 21 hours until it unlocks in EU ... and 15 hours until Torchlight 2. This is going to be a nice weekend.

I'm sorry but the comments on that WSJ review just keep getting funnier. From the reviewer apparently:

    Dear Community Members:

I know you’re angry at me for what I wrote previously on this article. I didn’t want to cause controversy on here at all. I just wanted to write a simple review about Borderlands. That being said, I do not take back what I said about Borderlands 2. I know you are all upset with me but Borderlands was NOT a good game and it definitely did not compare to Call of Duty or Halo in multiple ways, as I stated above. Call of Duty and Halo are going to contain much more rich multi-player abilities than Borderlands 2. Also, I believe the graphics on Call of Duty and Halo are much more detailed and accurate than in Borderlands 2. I was basically just writing my opinion on how I dislike Borderlands 2. It wasn’t supposed to be against a community member or anything at all. Please stop writing on my YouTube, Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. Also, please stop calling my work. Nobody deserves this much harassment because of his belief on a simple video game that wasn’t up to standards.

    Thank you,

    Adam Najberg

Interface is good to me, I dont remeber BL1's tbh. Its doesn't feel like a shitty port. Selecting weapons from inventory is a bit odd but easy enough. Phyx system is fun. Enemies are far more dynamic. So far, most areas, depending on the quest your on, the enemies/Boss's still respawn, but its meant for grinding unlockables/gear. I donno, it never bothed me before, its kinda like saying the same thing about Diablo games for example.

Thanks man. I appreciate the feedback. I know what you mean, but somehow it really annoyed me in the first one. Don't know why either :S

but he was right about alot of things considering the publication he is writing for and the people that will read it. just because a bunch of faggots on the internet can't handle that a video game they like isn't praised by everybody in the world doesn't give them the right to harass him; it's pathetic.

claptrap IS annoying, the story IS dildos (i didn't know wtf was going on in borderlands 1, until he spelled it out in his article, which was sourced from wikipedia), the game iS meandering and drags on for no reason without providing any fun during the downtime, the objectives of the game ARE hard to follow if you pick it up expecting a guided experience akin to CoD, 60 dollars IS a lot for a game and when you charge that much you expect to be compared to your peers - just like we do with everything else in the consumer market.

faggots on the internet, WHO WOULD HAVE THOUGHT IT WAS POSSIBLE!

The guy is pleading for people to stop spamming him and ease up on the hate. It's funny and sad at the same time. That's all I am saying about that.

As for his points, yeah...not everyone is going to like BL and the mass market CoD player might very well hate it. I have no problem with that. And to be more fair, he does acknowledge that some people are going to love it and so be it. I am one of those people who like BL but at the same time enjoy my annual CoD fix regardless of how shitty i feel the campaign has become. Crazy, right?

non taken and etc. If anything it brings up an interesting discussion of the appeal of games like CoD vs. BL...and how some people may actually enjoy both? (hey, i kinda liked the first Black Ops!)

i thought it nose-dived in enjoyability after 30 minutes but my dad enjoyed the shit out of it.

and thats kinda the point, the people that might buy BL and expect an experience like CoD, hence what this guy talks about is very relevant for those people.

it's like expecting everybody to enjoy sex and the city.

Played for six hours straight today, completely lost in it. I got home at noon, played a bit of Binding of Isaac, then started BL2 for the first time. After some really super awesome amazing fun, I look up and holy shit it's night time suddenly!

This game owns, is what I'm saying, yo. This, X-Com, Dishonored, within a month of each other. I'm fucked

It's like those "only 9/10? ill stab your face" comments in mob from. He said some rubbish but harassing him on every possible medium doesn't really help.

Personally, I didn't get on with Borderlands 1 because I played it single player like a loser and it quickly became repetitive. I’ve expressed an interest in Borderlands 2 with my pals but we’ll see if they pick it up.

In reply to the single player comments. Being responsible for the majority of plot missions and side missions of Borderlands 1 I know how the fans feel. The story was there, but found mostly in your imagination. Working on some of the plot and side missions for the sequel I believe we nailed the improvements. The types of missions have multiplied. We keep you guessing so that objectives don't spoil the fun! The missions you do have much more of an impact, even if subtle, to the world of Pandora. But most importantly Anthony Burch nailed the writing and story after working so hard with designers. The dialog and humor are incredible. I find myself wanting to play the game single player just to hear said dialog at my own pace. The game is not linear. You are not playing that crafted single player narrative. But I will argue the world is just as much if not more rich. Try to play the game single player and tell me what you think, I want to hear your feedback! And after you consume it, invite some friends. Gearbox has created an amazing title we are all very proud of. My contributions have roots here, at Mapcore.

While you flirt with each other, I just finished the game with a friend on True Vault Hunter mode (2nd playthrough), as Axton. Sweet, sweet double turrets with rocket pods combined with a Slag weapon. The last boss felt like he took an hour to kill, holy shit.

I've got about 4 hours logged on steam for BL2 and 30 for the first game and I'm getting the same vibes I got with that. Not much has changed yet but after about a half hour of playing I realize I haven't really done much and quit out. I know it's a loot game and probably a coop thing that's fun with friends but I can't do coop with people cause it just undermines every aspect of the game. I don't know if it's just there isn't much of a challenge to anything or if it's just, for how fucking bonkers the game comes off, it's actually pretty tame in a lot of respects. The combat still feels pretty pedestrian, none of the encounters feel like much of anything to tackle and feel more like they're just there to farm. Also discovering stuff is a bit of a non event cause basically everything so far, like the first, is marked very carefully with clear, consistent language which is great for a game where you don't want people getting lost or wandering around but that's almost the entire point of the game and I end up never really feeling like I found something myself because it's kind of impossible to do that. Maybe I'm off here but I haven't really felt like I found something that was actually hidden in either game. It's definitely a trait of the loot genre or whatever, but there's a lot of room for more interesting exploration when you have a full 3d landscape that I don't really much of here.

I mostly just wish enemies really threw me for more of a loop cause all the weapon options stuff I imagine could be put to some cool use if the enemies forced me to do more than farm the shit out of them. I'll probably give it a few more goes, though.
