CMS portfolio ?

Obviously you are new here. Great portfolio making comes FIRST and all that other stuff you do should come in a distant second. Everyone knows employers don't look at your work but rather the font size, shape, and color of you title page name and what background you use. You will learn my friend.

It really doesn't matter what tool you use to create your portfolio, only the result is important.

You can create great portfolio designs in Wordpress and other CMS/blogs just as well as with HTML/CSS, as long as you spend some time on it. The good thing about CMS is that they are usually compatible with all browsers and may come with simple ways to make your folio readable on iphones and such. The downside is that they are very easy to setup but usually can become quite complex to personalize to your liking, because you have to understand how they work first, and might end up doing HTML/CSS anyway to tweak the layout and such.

There's probably some that are more portfolio-oriented too, so you should look for tutorials on how to use those CMS to make portfolios before you decide which to use. A middleground of sorts could be Wordpress, because it's pretty light (blog-oriented) and comes with hundreds of templates that may suit your needs. But it's been ages since I really took a look at what's going on in the CMS world though, so don't take my word for it and I hope you find something that'll do the job.

In the end, usually less is more when it comes to designing your portfolio, so my personal advice is rather to create a simpler folio with basic HTML/CSS even if you have to spend some time learning that, because if you keep it simple then CMS is probably overkill (usually quite heavy in term of requests done for a single page, and you'll end up spending as much time understanding/tweaking it anyway).

I don't remember who it was, but there's a guy around here whose portfolio was a blank page with screenshots centered on it, and he did land jobs thanks to it because the content was awesome. It's more about not making it a pain to navigate than making it awesome looking or original.

That being said, since it's so easy now to make a nice portfolios using tons of free websites and templates your kind of stupid to not do it. As for if it makes a difference, yes but not as much as people assume. You're work and content matters far more.
