I think as this particular challenge is concerned we'll stick with the door - but, as mentioned, there's no reason your puzzle can't be entering the building to open the door, or exiting the building instead of entering, or just using it as a gate between two rooms. It is limiting, but that's the point! The couple challenges we've run so far have been pretty open-ended within their limitations - it should be fun to see how people work around the same base.

Jeeeeeez would Friday harry up already!I'm dying to get started on this, last thing I'd like to ask, since l'm not accustomed to mapcore challenges, can we use our entries how we like afterwards?

Absolutely! Your work is your own. Share it with the world, go back and re-build it, take it out back and carve 1 unit brushes through it... up to you!

To think you kiss your mother with that mouth! Terrible!

Ask Biessman about the 1 unit brush carving if you haven't heard that story. It's a good one. (Also the "you're in hell" bug fix)

I'd like to have 1 map where you are teleported to another door with a different solution after you complete the first puzzle, I have a lot of ideas so it would be nice. I don't know if we are allowed more than one entry though. Also I can't record video in Source, a lot of people can't, do we absolutely have to do this? Also do we have to release the .vmf, I've spent tons of time working on a lot of my advanced logical scripting that I don't want just anyone to steal.

    1. I think you should be allowed to enter multiple ideas.

    2. you can't use fraps? or drop console (~) and record a demo?

    3. I wouldn't think people are always out to steal your work. If you don't feel comfortable with sharing... I guess that's ok not to?

    Following up vivi's response:

1: If you really want to do a two-parter, I'd still consider it a single entry. If you have a cool idea based around it, go for it.

2: The free version of Fraps or XFire should do the trick. If you absolutely can't get a video, you won't be disqualified, but I would highly recommend one in this challenge if you can manage it.

3: The idea is to share techniques, learn, and see how other people work. It'd be my personal preference that everyone entering includes the source file to demonstrate what methods they used to construct the puzzle, but you won't be disqualified if you choose not to.

also... WE ARE LIVE! See you back here in 3 weeks. I'll keep up the weekly or so Twitter reminders.

As always, feel free to continue to use this thread to share your progress and discuss the challenge in general. Good luck!

Isn't advanced logical script stealing just a decompile away anyway (or does decompile "break" it?).

    Also, time to begin!

Let's get overambitious and crash and burn!

I've been having trouble loading the UDK version of The Door. I have downloaded and extracted the file but when I attempt to load the GC_TheDoor.udk via the UDK editor I receive a windows error. Is there something missing from the file?

I have the April version of UDK. Let me know if you need anymore information and what that information is.

Update: I re-downloaded April UDK and it works now. Must have been a missing file somewhere.

Can you post more information about the error you're seeing? I tested the file locally in the April build and did see a couple warnings on load but it still worked fine. The only crash I saw was attempting to load it in the March 2011 build.

vivi, anything that should have been included that might be missing?

    Welcome to the forums BlueDude!

Looks like he got it working. Can't wait to see what you come up with.

Can I change the door to be sliding? It would work a lot better with my idea.

I too have the same request...

I mean... as long as it's a puzzle about opening a door, aight?

Make the door open however you need it to Rotating, sliding, merged to a single door, exploding, smashed open... All up to you!

o-k, so i'm frustrated again by kismet. anyone who has used it before would do me a great favor by helping me out if you could.

so I have a physics object that moves when you shoot it, or walk into it. my goal is to have the door open when the object hits it, and only the object..

so far i have a trigger volume set up around the door, with a triggervolume_0 Touch node in kismet. that is linked via the instigator line to a object var. then the touched line is linked to compare objects node, which compares the instigator to my key object that has to touch the door. the A==B line is then connected to matinee to run the animation. the trigger touch node also is connected to the matinee node via the untouched line to pause.

the deal is, is that when "use player only" is turned on in the triggervolume touch node, it all works when I walk into the door. and now that I have the compare object node, walking into the door doesn't open it, which is what I want.

is there something special you have to do to a physics object's collision to get it to react to trigger volumes? the physics object is a custom mesh with 2 collision meshes. (via UCX_ naming prior to exporting from maya.)

thanks for any help you guys can lend. here's my kismet window.

Select your trigger event in Kismet and set up the following:

TouchTypes -> Class Proximity Types - KActor (the default is pawn, change it to KActor)

Ehm... that looks like a pain in the ass.

How does it compare to source scripting?

Nah, Kismet is awesome. Much easier than Source I/O.
