My bet is that they will play very differently because of the destructables. Karkand wont be as easy to defend as it was etc, since the tanks can just blow everything up.

I'd rather have some more maps than a stupid doll they include in some preorder/limited editions. I mean, it's something you'd buy anyways... DLC is pretty big these days.
Better bang for your buck I'd say. And the whole "just include it in the game", yeah right... Why not push the release date back will ya. Time is money.
-
I'd rather have everyone have the maps so servers dont have to kick people when one of the new maps come up in the rotation.
Itsch pretty schimple.
It's not about you getting more maps. It's about other people getting less maps.

I consider it very foolhardy to preorder any game not by a very very very small select group of developers these days. Bad Company 2's launch was almost as bad as Brink's is now. Why should I pay extra for a worse version of the game just to get it early and with some pointless extra that 95% of other players can't experience? I was actually going to preorder Brink, because I was optimistic and they bumped it forward a week and ET is the best game ever, but I didn't have the cash on hand at the time, and now I'm glad, because Brink hates my generation of video card, and apparently AMD cards in general, with a passion. Once that game gets a few patches and is in a sale in a few months, then I'll have a really good new game. Until then I've got other stuff to play.

this is no different to the modern warfare or crysis 2 map packs that are released. the game still has multiplayer maps, nobody is getting fucked out of anything.
if you want the maps you buy them, if you don't you play vanilla.
i really don't see where this is such a big deal, you just happen to know about the DLC before the game ships. you realise that DLC for modern warfare and other games is decided upon and in production before the game is officially released, right?
-
who said modern warfare and crysis 2 were good examples to follow?
If you want to charge for content in this type of game, it's better to do so via a full-fledged expansion so that the distinction between non-expansion servers and expansion servers is very clear (like in BF2). As it stands now, you'll probably have servers with a very mixed rotation and you'll get kicked once the server switches to a map which you do not possess. It's not very user-friendly and kind of dickish.
-
amazing, it's like you've already played the game.
-
yes, i'm so fuckin clever.
tell me oh mighty rick how else they would approach this?
if a server runs a map I do not have it's either:
a, they let me play the map FOR FREE*
b, they prevent me from playing on the server
c, they kick me once the map comes up in rotation
*the most likely option...
-
in bf2142 they did the thing where they kicked people off the server if it was playing an expansion map. it worked and didn't bother anyone. i doubt it'll be different here.
-
It bothered me.

i never had a problem with it. obviously it wasn't a perfect solution, but you'd be hard pressed to find a better one. besides, people usually have the dignity to understand "oh right, i didn't buy x, so i can't play x".
-
can't remember where i heard this, but i was under the assumption that it would be treated like the vietnam expansion of bc2 (read: a compartment of a game that you have to sign into separately).

There's a big difference between DLC you can buy whenever and a preorder bonus that's in place specifically to make you preorder, availably only from preorder.
Buying games before they're out is dumb, splitting the playerbase because you're trying to make people buy games before they're out is dumb. DLC is a separate argument (the only DLC I've bought in recent memory is Killing Floor skins

Whoever thinks these levels will only be accessible to those that pre-ordered the game are very ignorant of the game industry's practices. They will absolutely be a Day 1 5 or 10 bucks download to everyone else.
This is a pre-order INCENTIVE. It helps Gamestop and Wallmart figure out how many copies they really should buy from EA. Hence giving it for free because EA is making more money from the large retailers buying a more precise number of copies for themselves instead of either coming up short or having way too many unsold copies a few months after release they'd have to send back to EA. Everybody wins.

easy sunshine no need to get all agressive. i live in sweden now and i would hate for us to cross paths and be all angry over something i said on the internet >:L
anyway, i don't know how it will be handled. my guess is they kick people off and then pop up a little link for you to buy the map, something like xbox live and the modern warfare maps etc.

)it's not ONLY available as a preorder bonus and you would be a fool and a communist to think that. there is also no splitting of playerbase of those who bought it before and after release, i still don't know where you got that from. if you want to play battlefield 3, then you can buy it and enjoy it. but dice are saying: "we have this DLC planned, you can choose to buy it once we release it, or you can buy it in advance at no extra cost if you want to, because if you really want it you are probably going to buy bf3 anyway, so why not get something for free."
i honestly don't see how it's such a big deal. it's not technically part of bf3. it's also a good tactic to get some preorders in, it's good to get the money trickling in as soon as possible.
and DLC actually stands for Down Loadable Content, there is no definition for what DLC needs to be. player skins, guns, maps, a new campaign, etc etc as long as it's downloadable then it's DLC.

pfft, it's just general internet barking, no grudge involved.

can't be angry at a guy with such an awesome portfolio.
Furyo: Yes, that is why this deal is in place.
I just think there are pre-order bonuses that are better... but I digress, business is business.
I mean, I see the reality of EA needing a round in every chamber to go against MW3...
Still, the naive hippy-ass community-centered gamer in me isn't exactly in love with the approach.
But I'll shut up now!

Does anyone in the industry realize how much more positive the response from consumers would be if you just actually came out and said things like this in your PR releases.

gamers will complain about everything so it doesn't matter what anyone says.
