I knew it was bad and I'm playing it to get more examples for my level design site. The first enemies and levels are already awful.

EDIT: I couldn't bare this game. I had to download a save and use the cheats to rush it straight to the ending with god mode and infinite ammo. lol. It has the same mistake of Prey 2006. They give no clues and leave the player lost with no proper directions.

    What's your level design site?

Cool thanks for that, I'll give it a read this weekend (well the parts where I'm able to read :) )

I played an hour of Death Stranding and gave up. I didn't hate it, just got busy and distracted and then never got back to it.

Recently played Lego Star Wars Skywalker Saga. Definitely exceeded my modest expectations.

However the primary game I'm into now is Horizon Forbidden West. In some ways it's better than HZD, and in some ways not as good. It does feel overall easier but the older I get the less I care about how hard a game is and instead I enjoy how playable a game is without forcing me to work or think too hard. HFW floats the boat on that.

I quitted Quake 4 in the first mission and watched about 1 hour in youtube at 2x speed. I guess, the stroggs universe is a dead end. It adds some new tech on top of the old quake, but that's it. It's too dark and repetitive. There is a lot of blood stains everywhere but this is an action game, not an horror game. F.E.A.R. does a better job at bringing horror than doom 3 and quake 4 is boring. The medic dying on me made me quit haha. Id tech 4 suffers from a severe lack of contrast. It must had been some trade off between performance and color precision that they made at the time.

This brought me one more example to my level design site. Revisiting areas can be done and the first mission did it and opened up some new passages, but to travel back just to escort a medic is so boring. It doesn't add bring anything fresh to the plot. It just forces the player to revisit a previous area twice.

    Trying Rage now.

I remember thinking the combat in Rage was quite good and all the stuff in between was a waste of time. btw, which is the best FEAR?

    FEAR 2 is the best.

FEAR 3 ruined the horror theme.

I have them all I think but only played the first, back when the game was still current.

I remember it was the only game that sent me real chills down my spine (in the final scenes, some other cool stuff had been spoiled in the trailers and I remember working very well on there too).

I own them all, they are in my steam pile of shame. I might give the first 2 a try this summer. I remember playing the demo for FEAR1 what feels like 15 years ago and really liking it.

I really gotta stop buying video games 😅

Megatextures really look good from a distance, but extremely low res up close. The wasterland's design is very good.

Just learned something new from Rage. If the player visits an area and then has to go back to the beginning of it. Either make the mission end near the beginning or give the player a shortcut, like they did with ziplines to go back to the beginning.

I brought a lot of games during the summer sales such as Deus Ex, Saint Row 3, GTA IVA, Serious Sam, Bioshock Collection, Sonic Mania, Amnesia, Halo MCC and etc.

Also I've been playing earlier DUSK it's such a fucking amazing game if you're into horror, Quake or any fps such as Half-Life.

    New Blood is amazing :D

Rage isn't a bad game, but it's not exceptional either. Right before the journey to the other wasteland, where the sky is dark, I dropped it. The env art in this game is really excellent. I saw how much effort they put in to make a believable wasteland. The thing is, megatexture made it all static. There is nothing to interact with. All you do in this game is to accept a quest, go to a place, then comes a door and a loading screen. Once in you kill everyone there, do your job, return to the outdoor wasteland, drive back to the city and go to the next mission. There is no plot to explain the lives of each character, each place you visit. It comes down to "bandits are trying to explode the blablabla, go there and stop them". It's not like bioshock where the whole world has a background story from its creation to the current time where the game takes place. It's doesn't offer much beyond killing enemies. I don't know if the hardware at the time imposed serious bottlenecks or if the script writers didn't develop the world any further than just give an excuse to explain that the world was destroyed by an asteroid. Take out the enemies from each level and there is nothing left to populate it. It has good mechanics, various weapons, different tactics, but the world itself seems a wasted potential. Compared to bioshock it is way easier to earn credits and obtain ingredients.

I mean, Carmack is also famous for the quote “story in videogames is important as story in pornos”… they are not really known for their storytelling.

The tech was ported even to mobile, there was a mobile on rail shooter for iPhone.

I haven’t played it yet, always admired the fantastic art, everything is chiselled by hand… but all the rest takes a back seat. I remember the critiques and prob a reason why I never prioritised playing it. At the time I was expecting what Mad Max by Avalanche came to be. That one is fantastic visually and also fun, despite the repetitiveness. (Although every outpost or hideout is actually different)

I finally tried wolfenstein young blood as everything zenimax was moved over to steam a while back. To be as polite as possible, don't play it.

Also been playing Dyson Sphere program, its pretty good but it lacks the clear progression and ability to easily monitor your "progress/status" of your economy when compared with Factorio. The fact that your economy is split up onto different planets and you can see everything at a glance like you can on the factorio map makes it difficult to see what you need to do next throughout your galaxy.

Still playing a lot of Hell Let Loose. The sad part is, everything I like about this game was in Day of Defeat, and none of the stuff I don't like was in Day of Defeat.

Been playing quite a lot of Lost Judgment since it dropped on Steam, honestly one of the best combat systems I've ever played. Giving a bit of inspiration for my game's combat.

PS plus has been amazing for me since I've never owned a Playstation until I got PS5. Since the last year I've played most of the exclusive series from back to back, Uncharted, God of War, Last of Us... but just recently they unexpectedly pulled all the Metal Gear games when I was just about to start to play them. Talk about a big massive fuck you to a lot of people, including me, thinking 'classics catalogue' would be something that would be constantly expanding once the time goes on. I hope that means PS4 and PS5 are getting Metal Gear remasters, which will probably be dog shit knowing who's behind the publishing.

    OK enough about the rant.

Been enjoying God of War Ragnarök, though the core gameplay is so much of the same as the last one. I feel it's wearing down on me although It's constantly making it's best to mix things up.
