Ya, it's so hard to end a game well. Even Bioshock failed in that regard

edit: I guess you could make an argument that both Half-Life's failed as well

Bioshock definitely failed in that regard.

But both Half Life games did it well imho. I mean, you could argue that "mystical intra-dimensional man jumps in and grabs you right at the end" is a cheap narrative mechanic, but I think they pulled it off.

lol, finally got past the first mission in Deus Ex: HR where you have to retrieve the Typhoon. God damn I am bad at this game, but it was great fun. Love how dynamic the gameplay can be, suits a stealth addict like me perfectly.

I took so long exploring the Sarif building before getting into the helicopter that by the time I even landed all the hostages were dead.

It's a little convenient, but Half Life establishes that this happens and that the G-Man is watching you (whether through VO, 'cutscene', or just having him show up in odd locations). The plot synopsis version isn't that great, but the execution is well done.

Really loved Deus Ex HR's gameplay and the immersive world they created, but the execution of the story had issues, whether that be major philosophical issues or just silly contrivances like Adam turning into a total moron in cutscenes. Would love to see another go at it though, hopefully with some lessons learned.

I've only just escaped the Sarif building for the first time and done some side-quest to get some footage off some dude, and I'm just loving all the layers of depth to the world. Before the guy even approached me about getting some footage he was being blackmailed with, I'd found a crate of drugs he'd stolen hidden in a vent and been looking into the situation via office computers' emails and stuff. I love the whole computer/PDA/e-book thing in general, it adds so much to the richness of the world.

Also loving the dynamic nature of the gameplay. For ages I was totally stuck in some really hard stealth situation, and I kept getting assholed if I tried to shoot my way through. So I picked up a trash can and threw it across to the other side of the room, and everyone went to check it out while I snuck past.

Anyway, the atmosphere of this game is just incredible. It's been some time since I've felt so immersed and been looking forward to getting back into its world. I also really like my character, he cool man.

As for the hostage thing, I liked how that was done. There's a lot of interesting incidental dialogue in the Sarif building that you'd never hear if you rushed straight to the first mission, yet if you take the time to explore it the game punishes you by having Sarif going crazy at you down the phone about the situation getting worse and then when you turn up everyone's already dead. Then you get the police, Sarif people, etc criticising you and saying you let them all die, and some woman going on about her beloved husband being killed.

    My rating of this game:

Just finished Antichamber over last week. It was fun, I didn't get frustrated by the frustrating puzzles and I was able to see past the creators "smart ass" attitude towards certain things.

F.E.A.R. - Horribly bland environments galore but still the best combat in any FPS to date. I forgot how long this game is, it feels like you've been through a war when it's all over.

Gonna play through Project Origin next and I'm torn as to whether or not I should buy F.3.A.R. since I haven't played that one yet...

I always really liked the boring fear environments. Felt like real places. Just a super depressing atmosphere about them and they made for good combat spaces.

FEAR 3 is also good. I'd say it's probably the best of the franchise. It's hard to out do the first of any series but aside from a few modernisms (the scoring system, which I actually enjoyed but it seems counter to a horror game) it's a really solid shooter. Some really cool levels and the guns feel good. Took a lot of shit for no reason, and it's at the very least a better game than Fear 2.

Yeah, FEAR was awesome, FEAR2 I fucking hated, FEAR3 I never even touched it, so apparently it's worth a try? I kind gave up hope on the games industry ability to make more horror games. What happened to truly horror games like FEAR, Condemned, Silent Hill 2 and the old Resident Evil? The CoD era happened...

So, I'm still playing Deus Ex: HR. Jesus Christ, I've not been as addicted to a game as this for years. I feel like I've put a huge amount of time into it, yet I'm still loving it.

I've currently just finished all the side-missions in Hangsha and am about to enter the Tai Yong Medical place after the assholes messed up the pod hotel (poor civilians). How far through the game am I at this point? Near the end, halfway? It's hard to tell.

Amnesia? Scarier than all those games put together.

Thanks for the recommendation, I'll be sure to pick it up soon!

I don't get why people have so much hate for F.E.A.R. 2? They fixed all the problems with the first game people bitched about, I personally love it as much as the first...

Amnesia was cool but it wasn't that scary. Being scared is all subjective though. I thought Siren Blood Curse was scary as hell (the ps3 one).
