As soon as I finished reading the post on Rock Paper Shotgun I couldn't help but to run out immediately (metaphorically) and buy Xenus 2: White Gold off of Gamersgate. It's pretty good so far. Like Far Cry 2 with Deus Ex elements, light RPG stuff (you level up and at each level up you can get a Fallout esque perk, otherwise all stats depend on your gun and armor and any temporary medicating, such as drinking an energy drink or limb injury). Or for another comparison, like a nice, happy go lucky tropical wartorn hellhole version of STALKER. Gameplay-wise it's actually significantly more streamlined and friendly than any game mentioned thus far, though it's got its technical issues. Especially noteworthy is the english translation, which is a) an atrocity, and b) Cuts out after the intro cutscene, leaving nothing but silent text, as well as silent most everything else- sound effects are bugged so that only one or two can play at once. If music is playing gunfire is silenced, which had resulted in multiple unexpected deaths for me while I was doing inventory management while thinking I was safe. If you drop the sound files from the Russian version in the Eng version of the game suddenly everything's peachy again. Downloading these probably breaks a rule or two but then they're linked on the developer's own forums without repercussion, and there doesn't seem to be much of a chance of a fix, so I'm certainly not going to say anything.

    http://board.deep-shadows.com/index.php ... t=0&p=8382

For some reason I find Columbian peasants speaking Russian to a (I'm pretty sure, although in the intro he sounds like some sort of weird as shit combination of welsh and new zealand) American special agent (sent to their country by the RIAA to deal with deadly cocaine causing rappers to drop like flies) is really hilarious.

Also the main character is a STALKER nerd, you can babble about chernobyl and pripyat to anyone who mentions giant animals or sea creatures to you. "HEY THEY'RE JUST LIKE THOSE MUTANTS AT CHERNOBYL YOU KNOW ABOUT CHERNOBYL RIGHT *goes into the history*" I've had that conversation (different setup but same topic) like three times now with random dudes loitering about.

FPSRPG are rare, especially onces that are cool with not having ball busting difficulty and inexplicable game mechanics (the closest this gets is the weapon upgrades. At first I thought you were going to be taking guns apart, two worlds style, because of a "disassemble" button on that screen in the inventory, but as it turns out it's just weapon mod items you buy and apply to guns yourself (at risk of breaking it) or for a fee at certain guys, like faction quartermasters). I'd recommend White Gold to anyone who digs STALKER and wants to play it on a tropical island while making their avatar chase cocaine with absinthe and an enema.

Edit: It probably helps my first impression that I was listening to Mickey Avalon while playing.

Also I just checked my email and I've got an invite to the Darkspore beta

haha, can you say what you didn't like about it? Everyone keeps recommending this game to me but I haven't bothered playing it because I don't like scary games

It tried too hard for my tastes, and takes itself too seriously as well. It immediately tried to set the tone in the first seconds of the game by trying to scare you, but just made me roll my eyes. But having been spoilt by more sophisticated games like amnesia and system shock 2 it just doesn't do anything for me. As for the gameplay, my arch nemesis of "press button not to die" appears and got me killed within the first section (about 40 seconds into the game) because I couldn't actually see it telling me to do so, (comes up in that real time gui hud thing that moves with the camera and the camera was jiggling around and moving with a monster on me) as I had no idea about it until then. It's also incredibly repetitive and predictable to boot.

What I can recommend though is its production values.

Diablo isn't trying to be anything else than what it is. I want to sit down with dead space with the lights out and immerse myself like I did with amnesia and s22 but it just won't let me enjoy myself.

My main problem with Dead Space is how the third person camera moves, trying to make the camera dramatic and cinematic, to add something instead of just being the player's view. It does that, but at the expense of having a responsive, directly accurate camera. It really bothers me and completely takes me out of it.

I've never played a single third person action game that can stand up to Max Payne.

I'll get my copy today, we should do some laggy fights again!

It's fairly complicated and every character has a death touch, though.

I'm on it with my dirty 360 version.

And I'm losing online and I don't know why. I'm also winning online and still don't know why either.

    Ah, I got it for PS3. I don't have a 360 fight stick yet.

I've not played any real people yet because I want to decide a team before I head online, but I've kind of been put off following the London fighting game scenes opinion of it (not that I’ve even popped into the London arcade this year). At high-level play most characters can turn a random hit into ToD 100% combos. MvC2 was broken, but there's different kinds... Pheonix in X-Factor - X-Factor - can viably chip your entire team to death ((((

Also, it's dangerous to go alone! Take this!

The MP server I play on hasn't updated yet for the 1.3 update, so I've been generating random worlds and playing single player. I found a good one, a giant very thickly forested mountain, surrounded by ocean, with many very dangerous caves. The cave system and how dangerous they were (not just in monsters spawning but the many steep vertical drops, some of them ending in lava) got me in a hellish sort of mood. So when I returned to the surface for supplies, I built this for my house.

The bed is actually in the basement, in a makeshift crypt, on an altar.

Started playing Dead Space. On iPhone. So far I like it much better than any of Dead Space PC games. So much easier to control the player with touchscreen. And it looks awesome, too.
