i bought a pstriple for uncharted and metal gear, also played a bunch of other exclusives, thoroughly enjoyed read dead redemption, even played deus ex on it while my pc was out of action. do you really not have 200 quid to spend? it's a pretty decent investment, i watch blurays on my ps3, treat it as my media player to stream movies from my pc to my tv.. for 200 quid? maybe when NS2 ships you can buy one

For once... And it pains me to say it... I agree with Dux.

If I had a PS3, sure I'd buy it.. But there's no way I'm ever going to own it just to play an Indiana Jones ripoff

TBH I don't unserstand why this game get's the praise it does.

The gameplay concept is really piss weak. They clearly set out to make an indiana jones type game and shaped the gameplay around the story and concept, rather then have a great gameplay idea and shape the story and world around that. The platforming is uninteresting since Drake does all of the dangerous stuff automatically, you can just barely go wrong, so it doesn't elicit the same satisfaction as let's say the platforming in Super Mario. This may not matter in game where that is not the focus, after all no one cares you just select and click a target in an RTS, but here navigating the environment is one of the main things you do. So it's fairly boring.

Also having everything be scripted removes the tensions in some of the situations. After all knowing that tank isn't going to be there until you pass that checkpoint isn't the same as knowing an AI tank is on your ass regardless where you go.

Then we have the gears of war like combat, which isn't much fun since aiming with a joystick sucks, even more so when your aim is disturbed every time you are hit or fire your weapon. Once again the setting and story limit your enemy to human most of the times, mixed up with humans with more armor once in while. The enemy does have an actual AI that can't see you behind walls, so there are some moments of clever manoeuvring.

I think the gunplay in Uncharted 2 is amongst the finest I've played this generation. While you can certainly play it Gears of War-style where you just go around attracting a hail of bullets while shooting shit up, it's infinitely more satisfying if you make use of the extensive stealth mechanics added to Uncharted 2 (and seemingly extended considerably in Uncharted 3 which excites me a lot) to approach combat in a more strategic and tense way.

I played through Uncharted 2 for a second time using purely the tranquiliser gun, and it was extremely fun. It's possible to get through the majority of the areas in the game without ever setting off an enemy alert, which means you don't get the reinforcements that appear when you're spotted and can take much more time carefully taking everyone out. Was a lot like playing Metal Gear Solid, actually.

Obviously the premise of the game isn't the most original in the world with blatant allusions to Indiana Jones at every turn, particularly with the climax of the original. But then who cares? There's never been a really good Indiana Jones game anyway apart from point-and-click adventures in the 90s, so a game that captures the essence of what made Indiana Jones great (wit, compelling enemies, a touch of the supernatural, lots of hand-to-hand combat, etc) is good with me.

Uncharted as a series is probably overrated because no game can stand up to the absolute reverence the second title in particular gets, but to say it's not a damned good game is behaviour deserving of a good slapping around IMO.

Biggest problem with Uncharted is it gets away with being as simple a cover shooter as they come but free of the derision usually brought along with that tag. Platforming is almost negligible, as it's just a shade less automated than Enslaved.

    Fun, tho.

Uncharted is great fun and I really enjoy playing it. Who gives a shit if it's like indiana jones, that's just cause it's the only thing like indiana jones besides indiana jones. The actors/writing is really funny too. The experience of the game is fucking awesome and it's really easy to be immersed in and enjoy. These games make me giggle like a little girl.

Being careful to avoid enemies is useful and fun, but I tihnk that 'adding stealth' to make the combat 'more strategic' is a trope or cliche worse than cover shooting. Stealth and strategy aren't the same thing.

Well it depends how you use the stealth. Numerous times I'd spend time studying the movement patterns and whatnot of enemies before even tackling the area, just like when playing Metal Gear Solid or Commandos. I would say that's certainly developing some kind of strategy as I have a rough idea of what I'm going to do and when long before actually doing it.

Of course I'm sure there're countless games that have stealth mechanics but don't use them particularly well, but Uncharted 2 does a great job of often letting you see an area you need to get through and study it beforehand.

Stealth is, by definition, a subset of strategy -- a larger, pre-determined plan / sequence of actions. You have to plan where to go after studying the area and patrol paths. Combat, on the other hand, is tactics -- reacting to the moment, to the immediate game state. In conclusion, [insert game that you like] sucks.

Uncharted games are extremely fun to play imho, I've not had so much fun with a game as I did with the Uncharted titles, especially the second one. I must admit I was not very pro-console in the past, but having seen how much awesome the Uncharted series is, I just had to surrender and buy a PS3 to see what all the fuss is about, I haven't regretted it...
