BBC Documentary - Panorama, Addicted to Games

With all these lifes that WoW claimed I don't see anything wrong with making a documentary about people who fell for this kind of addiction. This of course only applies to what I've seen in the trailer...

I was going to post about this, already set to record! I feel that it will be the same sort of argument that's been going on for ages though with interviews with people who have no fucking clue what they're talking about.

The mother was right to stop her son playing WoW though, because it's shit and he might actually have a chance of learning social skills...

Traditional media is fighting for market share every day and the rise of a new media will always be seen as a threat to them. Every second you're playing a game is a second you're not watching commercials on TV, so they of course will try and lobby against games.

BBC isn't funded by adverts, although viewing figures do effect them, but only in relation to other TV channels and not other mediums.

Everytime something like this happens I watch Gameswipe or the Penn and Teller games episode.

I watched it and it wasn't that bad. It seemed a lot fairer then I thought it would be.

Mental addiction != Physical addiction.

Mental addiction is what people with weak will power suffer. Physical addiction is your body suffering withdrawal symptoms.

You never know what kind of conclusions people with prejudices about videogames will draw from this, but in my opinion this was a fair, unbiased report on the dangers of gaming addiction.

I'm concerned that people may only listen to what they want to, but overall it was an informative and truthful piece.

I consider myself a very active gamer, but I don't have an addictive personality, never did. I find enjoyment in my games, but even when I was playing Guild Wars (MMO) I wasn't putting more than 4 to 5 hours a day, and definitely not playing it every day. I can safely say that Videogames had a very positive impact in my life, strengthened the bonds with my family and friends even becoming my job. I wish he could have explored just a little bit more of the positive aspects of gaming, but that's just me.

But I agree that we, as an industry, should be more self aware and informative of the possibility of game addiction. Especially if we want to remain relatively free of regulations and prejudice from the mass media. But I can't see it happening anytime soon, WoW, CoD and Farmville are just too profitable at the moment ¬¬

It's pretty much what I expected really, people with addictive personalities being sucked in easily, the bit where the asian guy was telling the reporter that he was being annoying because he wanted to play the game made me annoyed, I'd have pulled the bastard plug out of his computer! Two cases of WoW addiction... not surprised, that episode of South Park says it all. Also anyone who neglects their friends due to a videogame just needs to be removed from the genepool imho.. what the fuck?!
