It's probably bullshit yeah, but you never know what those spam filter will filter.

Get a gmail or even better, get your own domain (its pretty cheap).
I'm actually thinking of switching from my hotmail to my gmail now and going away from MSN and over to Gtalk/skype forever. I'm hating on the new MSN look and it constantly spams me with bots trying to show me their awesome webcam.
Got rid of hotmail 10 years ago. I don't think anyone filters it out but it's just a matter of usability that I stick with GMail.
hotmail does get filtered out from time to time. anyway, you don't wanna take any chances when applying for jobs.
just get a gmail addy like the rest of the world and move on with your (now much better) life

Problem is with these two very old mail-services that just due their age they are the most often target of spam-systems.
I don't see anything different about Gmail than Yahoo (I have emails on both), I didn't think that many people used it to be honest. You also need to submit your phone number to them for "verification" reasons just to have a new address now... Ridiculous in my opinion.
Regardless, I would personally get my own domain that goes along with my folio site.
Not sure about Yahoo, but one nice bonus of Gmail is you can set up a (free) business account which lets you use your own domain for emails if you have one. For example, my various @ryanjohnwilliams.com addresses are all accessed through Gmail and are entirely hosted by Google — not just forwarded. Means you get excellent performance, resources, webmail client, etc for free.
I would personally recommend getting a domain name and using it's email address. You can then even have it forward to another account, such as Gmail, If you would like to keep using your personal email address.
If your personal website happens to be your portfolio then this method has the benefit of informing your potential employer that you have a website they can visit every time they email you.
I don't know the exact status of how it is, but it would make very good sense if companies just blocked hotmail as it's only spammers and people who haven't left that nineties that are using that service anyway.

You can do that with Yahoo too It's really neat.

Like we just said, you can do it with Gmail or Yahoo. The only prerequisite is that you go to a domain registrar yourself and buy one (eg: Go Daddy) — it's about $10 a year for a .com. Then you can either use that domain with a web host (comparatively expensive) or set it up with Gmail or Yahoo for free.
