After loling hard at this pic, and loling again. It really made me think about it. It's incredible how FPS games went from being "games", to "interactive cinematic experiences".

Not exactly a bad thing, but sometimes you do miss your good old games from the last decade where you needed to explore worlds.

    Edit: oh and btw: http://vectorpoem.com/news/?p=74

I played Bioschock 2 a few weeks ago and it looks more like a "1993 fps game"

Haha, I see what you mean! I never noticed Valve ripped that off so blatantly.

It's fun to wind up d3

Anyway, as for the picture I couldn't agree more after playing Resident Evil 5! It was a nice game but blimey they really do love the cut-scenes and "press button to not die" moments.

But what about Minecraft? It's the biggest shakeup of the FPS in a long time.

I'd be surprised if Minecraft is even classified as a game, let alone looked at by developers with anything but wonder as to how it made any money at all.

It's the creating + sharing part (similar to Garry's mod) that makes it so popular. It's a nice change from the "destroy everything" scenario common in most FPS. I call it "FPS 2.0". See, I just made that up. I'm an industry expert!

All it needs now is some shooting.

Someone's making an Sauerbraten version of Minecraft (for mac, because obv. that's where all the fps fans are) on the minecraft forums.

This is mostly a product of console gaming. Let's face it, its a simply more casual kind of design, it takes longer to move your avatar around the world, so if the world is more geometrically complex, people can more easily become frustrated. FPS are an obvious casualty for sure.

Or perhaps, instead of casual console movement speeds suddenly rearing their heads after over two decades, it's a product of games, across all platforms, becoming more casual orientated and having more of a focus on a expensive, cutscene-heavy, story-driven game structure.
