":1vp39do7]Not to be a dick but I really find this funny. Odds are that both the wife and child's are insured and will get a considerable amount of money every month for the death of the parent.Did you ever donated to child care? Did you ever helped those who really need help? Obviously you do whatever you want with your money, I'm not condemning but I'm just finding this... funny.

Err wtf? Its kind of sick you're thinking of this from a purely financial perspective. All the money in the world isn't going to ease the pain of losing a parent or lover -- and anyone with either should easily be able to have compassion for them.

The fact that other children suffer elsewhere is entirely irrelevant. What next, will we be criticised for feeling sorry for dozens of people dying in a plane crash because a much bigger one happened years ago and we don't contribute to the 9/11 fund?

I'm with Hp here, I mean honestly crazy amounts of people die for retarded reasons and I turn a blind eye, yet the moment somebody is connected to our industry it's suddenly different?

I'd donate money to people that are in more need, such as children in the 3rd world (I keep meaning to setup a sponsorship) or a friend needing a life saving operation but simply can't afford it.

Single parents are extremely common and it's much more managable than you guys think.

Sorry to be heartless ... the loss is obviously extremely sad but that goes without explanation.

To be honest I'd feel equally sad if I'd read this story and it was just some random family from the outback, and I'd imagine most people would too. The fact that an enormous statistic of people die every year doesn't take away the emotional significance of any single one of them. Not reacting to every single incident in the world isn't turning a blind eye; it's simply not possible to be aware of and to react to all the horror out there as we'd be emotionally drained. But it's only human to be touched every now and then by stories like this.

HP, you're making it sound like if you haven't donated to charity or given away money before, then its laughable to start now.

It doesn't really make any sense if you ask me, you should instead focus your energy on applauding the effort that is put in here in this particular case instead of ridiculing people because they havent financially backed every catastrophe on earth since the dawn of man.

Hello. My name is Erin Wood, and I wanted to send a request to please pass along my most sincere and heartfelt thanks to the gaming community for the overwhelming support provided to me in the past two weeks. I asked coworkers of Brian how I might best send my thanks, and they recommended sending them to Kotaku - hence this email. Any way you can help share this with the community would be much appreciated.

Brian always told me about how close-knit and wonderful the video game community was, but I had no idea until this tragedy just how special a group it really is. From all the articles and comments, to the emails and donations, I am simply stunned and so touched by the love, kindness, and generosity shown to me and my family. As everyone knows, the last 10 days have been the most difficult, dark days of my life. But this journey has been eased tremendously by the thoughts, prayers, and well wishes received from friends, family, and strangers living all over the world. It is so meaningful for me to hear about how his work and enthusiasm for the industry has touched others. Brian was completely and utterly devoted to the game industry, and was pretty much living his dream every day. He woke up every morning excited to be working in such a creative, demanding field. It was such a joy to be married to someone who was absolutely passionate about his professional life.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for the compassion and support. It is so appreciated, and has been a light to me in this impossible situation.

    Warm wishes,

    Erin

If somebody still doesn't understand why someone would donate money, re-read the letter 10 more times.

God that mini-documentary is so over the top and made just to pull heart-strings.... Yes it is very sad but there's no need to turn it into a melodrama.
