very cool .though they notion of adventure games being dead is kind off weird, there's tons still being made. Who here actually still plays adventure games? Does anyone even play the new sam and max and monkey island games?

I've played the new Monkey Island games, and the original two games along with them. I reaaaaaaaally enjoy a good adventure game, actually Psychonauts is something I only picked up this past christmas from the steam sale. I'm a huge fan of these games and am super stoked for what could result from all this

So in less than 24 hours they've made twice what they needed, bad-fuckin-ass~

Oh and yeah, the idea that adventure games are dead is slightly weird, it's kinda like saying that hardcore PC gaming is dead. They're obviously still there, but it's just a market that hasn't grown to the enormous behemoth that is....well, almost any other genre.

Well I think the video acknowledges that they're still made (the Germany line alluded to the fact most of them do come from there), but as someone who has played quite a few modern adventure games including the new Monkey Island and Sam & Max series, I'd say they're mostly great apart from the fact that financing generally just isn't there and so they end up quite low-budget and lacking production quality.

I think Telltale's games (Monkey Island, Sam & Max) suffer most from this because they simply haven't had the money to put together a truly good engine, so even their latest games look fairly dated and throughout the new Monkey Island series I was constantly distracted by obvious reskinning of the same models over and over, etc — and the lighting/texturing lacked what you'd expect from a modern game.

Double Fine is in quite a unique position because not only do they have a pretty awesome in-house engine (for their kind of style anyway), but they know it inside-out having developed an AAA game and a load of indie-style games on it. So for once we'll get a modern adventure game that isn't dragged back by all the technical issues most others are, and presumably most of the budget will go on pure production. Also the guys behind this are serious adventure game heavyweights which is another thing miscellaneous European start-up #10 doesn't have.

I played the new Jurassic Park game from Telltale recently. It was fun.

I suppose something for indie developers to take home from this (other than jealousy) is that this whole thing has drawn a lot of attention to the idea of crowdsourcing game development, and that actually it's a pretty cool concept regular people should perhaps get involved with more often. :derp:

agreed, i definitely think this is a major direction games will take on in the near future, along with better made versions of free to play (not just for casual games).

It’s impossible not to observe that on a day when gamers give a million dollars for a game that doesn’t yet exist, Ubisoft’s customers couldn’t play games they’d paid for and received. The contrast is important to notice.Rock, Paper, Shotgun »

I think it's cool because it probably got a bunch of people signed up on Kickstarter who have never backed a project before, but the idea to ask for money for your game project on crowd-sourcing sites has been going for quite a while among indie developers. Not sure if it's going to change that much for small teams. Like someone on the Twitters said yesterday: "Funding for universally beloved celebrity developers heading mid-sized studios with lengthy, proven track records will never be the same!"

Oh I understand that indies have been aware it for a long time, I was more referring to the regular guys out there who've probably never even heard of the concept before. I imagine that in future indie developers will find it easier to attract such funding once Double Fine has gotten their project out the door, as they'll have warmed to the idea of backing something they'd love to see made. Of course indie developers will always struggle to get that first project funded without some kind of credentials to back themselves up (ie: having some well-known guys on the team, a really awesome idea that you want the moment you hear it described, etc) — I guess that's where investors or grants would come in, or just struggle doing it for free of course.

Well, for crowd funding to work you need to be between being quite famous and not having enough money. For Tim Schafer this is a good fit, but I think even people in the IGF circlejerk would have trouble pulling this off.

I think an adventure game would be a good fit. Psychonauts and Brutal Legend had an amazing concept, fantastic characters and good humour, etc. but the game part needed more attention.

I have to say, that was the most amazing pitch video I've ever seen. Schafer and his team are really something else. Plus a point and click adventure game from the guys that invented the genre (no parallels to id, Rage, and FPSes please)? How could you not donate?

Now they're approaching $2M with 27 days to go. Who do you think will be the next major developer to hop on board the crowd-sourcing train?
