death?

    so i was kinda inspired by the doomsday topic, but what do you people here think of death? do you fear it? do you not care? will you convert to all religions so that you may have a chance at afterlife even though you lived your life as an atheist?

    keep in mind that i do not mean the death of others, more of what your own perception is of it.

    Death has nothing to do with religion, (at least not for me) so I wont even touch that topic. But I do respect those who need to have imaginary friends (aka gods) to ease up the thought of death.

    I'm just afraid of the way I'll die, not by death itself. But I think I already got used to the idea that eventually It will happen, and until then, I'll just try to be as much of a happy motherfucker as I can be!

    Even when you'll accomplish everything you want now, you'll want to accomplish new stuff by then. That's us human beings, always wanting more. (Which is not a bad thing)

    I do believe in the afterlife, but sure as hell not somewhere with golden houses. Do people really think about the whole thing of heaven and living forever? Forever is a really long time. The closest thing I could compare it to is the force in star wars. That sounds kind of stupid, but I don't believe it's somewhere that we would have the same definition of time and things like that. I think its a bit beyond trying to get your head around to be honest.

    Don't get me started on religion. It doesn't cause all the worlds problems, just most of them.

    Atheist. I probably have a very gloomy view on the afterlife. I believe once you die everything basically just goes black, and then you're simply not here anymore. Not that complicated or uplifting maybe, but it feels like the only logical thing to me. Sure I wish there was an amazing afterlife where you can get a bonus life, but I don't think that's the case. Doesn't really scare me, it's just something I accept and moves on.

    I think it's totally alright that people seek religious beliefs if it eases their mind about their place in this world and afterward, if it makes living easier for them. But I also think that would just be lying to yourself, and I'd much rather be honest and not fool myself like that.

    Well I just imagine death to be like sleep... When you are asleep, you don't know you're asleep, it seems that when you wake up no time has passed. I imagine death to be like that, but without the waking up part

    As someone said before me, I'm not frightened of death itself but how death will come to me. I hope I go peacefully, or really heroically. One of the two

    I'm agnostic and while the logical side of me thinks there's nothing, I just can't accept that. There has to be some form or after life. Even perhaps reincarnation. It just seems to stupid to and insane to just be shut off.

    Death will feel exactly like the billions of years before birth.

    Personaly i'm afraid of the process of dying. Afraid that it could be horrible and painful. But i'm not afraid of death.

    I wasn't raised with a religion and have only been to church 2 or 3 times for funerals so I never really had anything to conform to or rebel against wrt to death.

    When it comes to these "big questions" I just read stuff by Hegel, Kierkegaard, Nietzche, Heidegger, Schopenhauer, Camus, Sartre, Dostoyevsky, Hesse and many others. They never answer the questions but instead create new more interesting ones than "what is death", "what is the meaning of life", etc. I'm very skeptical of any writer or movement that claims to have an answer, even science to an extent.

    In conclusion, I imagine death being similar to the last 20 minutes of 2001 space odyssey, except forever.

    edit: I highly recommend these 2 short stories on death/life/afterlife by Issac Asimov. I'm sure a few of you are already familiar with them. I would read The Last Question first since it was published first.

    You don't make sense. There was nothing before you were born, and do you remember any of it? I'm guessing that's exactly what will happen when you die. You'll just not exist anymore. Just like before you were alive. And the world keeps spinning...

    that would be awesome endless dreams. then again, you need a funtioning brain to dream. which you don't have when you're dead. but that would be pretty epic if death was like that.

    See this is what keeps me awake at night. Now that I exist, I find it beyond comprehension that I will eventually stop existing. I like being alive.

    My gf is a nurse and has seen quite a lot of people die, and it doesn't seem to be that way. They don't suffocate, at least not the most part, rather they let out a last sigh that sounds like "aah, it's finally over". That said, she's either seen old or people pretty much constantly in pain. The rest just die while in their assisted sleep at the hospital or bleed their guts out. I guess.

    Personally, I'm far too busy being busy to care about death. I'll think about it when it's the last thing I can look forward to.

    I think the approach you're taking can only lead to frustration and anxiety. The argument you're making puts too much weight on your knowledge of what existence is. The language we think and form our questions in is too weak for the world we experience. It's a moot point because we wouldn't have civilization without language but it's important to keep in mind that defining existence is akin to trying to cut down an oak tree with a foam pool noodle.

    We all lay a foundation of assumptions before asking important questions. Questioning the assumptions will give you better results than answering your own questions.
