REALID, the dumbest thing ever

Nobody forces you to post on the Blizzard forums, and the Blizzard forums are a giant fucking cesspool and those posters have abused their privilege of posting on the Blizzard forums and this is a response to that. Don't want posters on the Blizzard Forums to see your RealID? Don't post! I think this is a grand idea.

Also the poster of that blog entry is an example of exactly the sort of greater internet fuckwad that inspired the policy. "Look, this can be abused! *abuses it* See, it's a bad idea because people like me might exploit it!"

It extends into B.Net as well. I don't think anyone really gives a shit about some forums. It's just the simple idea of it.

Don't start this shit here as well. There is already thousands of threads and billions of replies on the WoW-forums on this. The butthurt is so immense it's immeasurable.

My name isn't hard to find out. My guildmates knows it, lots of people on Facebook knows it (posting in groups = thousands can see it, among many otherthings), my webhost has it, etc etc. And I have yet to experience an uncomfortable situation where someone uses my name and information for bad things or to find me to give me a hug.

If no one is anonymous... trolling and bad behaviour ceases as there's no point to be an ass if everyone knows who you are, regardless of the character you are using to post with. It has become almost mandatory to use an oddly named level 1 character to post idiotic stuff. Currently, the WoW-forums are a cesspool of the said things. And people don't like the idea of knowing they just got owned in game by a girl...

I couldn't less of a shit about this. No one cares if your name is John Smith and you just made a thread asking for advices on your gameplay. If you rather want to reply some thread with "Wow your name is Hassan Muhammad? Lol towelhead bet you bomb places on a daily basis", you are retarded and have nothing to do on the internet. If you take things futher and stalk someone, you have serious problems and need help. Right away.

Well I personally don't care, I use my real name all over the place. But I can see how this could easily upset people who prefer to keep their real life isolated from their online life (particularly if they have millions of really embarrassing posts out there), and just because I don't care about privacy so much is no reason for me to shun the wishes of those out there who feel differently.

I have to admit I sometimes feel a bit red-faced when I read some of my really old forum posts from bygone aliases. I'm kind of good with them not being linked to my real name or my newer aliases.

So I think this is a lame move on Blizzard's part, but not one that bothers me personally. Privacy should be respected whenever someone wants it.

This is perhaps less a damnation of the RealID and more of posting your entire life details up to SSN on your facebook, and of creepy ass internet stalkers. The closest my real name has come to being on the internet in public was Twitter. I just posted my first name and initial attached to my account, and thought that was ok... then my dumbass older brother found me, followed me, with his full name as his screen name, and started tweeting about how much his life sucks. Family ruins everything.

Blizzard occasionally sends out confirmation emails where you have to confirm your ownership (if something happens to the payment or they have some other suspicion). It would be difficult to prove that you are "Glenn Beck" without any id (passport, visa) to go along with it.

I highly doubt that Blizzard would ask to see your passport/visa just for to verify your name on some internet message board. It wouldn't work. Most americans don't even have a passport, many don't have driver's license, etc.... and who would they ask for ID? Everyone? Or just those who they suspect use fake names?

It all just seems kind of redundant because it's so easy to just enter a fake name - i doubt they would have been able to verify it... unless it's tied to the credit card used for purchase..... that's the only real way i could see it happen..
