probably the only game i really care about for a few months and I've already managed to get two major plot twists spoiled for me because of idiots and internet. no place is safe from spoilers, not even mapcore. I should have just played the entire thing when it was released.
Yes, you should've.
Personally, I value the ability to freely talk about the game 90% of us just played together than to prohibit discussion due to people who a) Haven't played, but b) somehow can't avoid the thread about the game they haven't played. Sure, unwanted spoilers thrust upon you suck, but nobody's pulling a 4chan and coming up to your computer with a bull horn yelling out snape kills dumbledore to you.
Really, though, plot 'spoilers' don't really mean much for a game that tends to use its plot twists purely as punchlines or parodies (of itself, or other games). I linked a screenshot I took of a funny wall thing to a friend of mine, without realizing he hadn't reached that level yet (we were playing SP in unison after going through coop together) and he was pissed. But then like halfway through the game I guessed the final plot twist to him (correctly, as it turned out) and we both just laughed about it.

Jetsetlemming: There's a spoiler tag. But yes, ideally you should avoid threads like this if you have yet to play the game.
However, people may want to know what the general opinion is before buying or for some reason want to check the thread (stuck, have bugs, perhaps played the coop but no the SP etc) and they should not need to see any spoilers.
THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

There are better sources for both of those things than mapcore threads, puddy

There are several ways you can do that. If you don't like spoiler tags, why not just create a new thread with a spoiler warning?
About the spoiler thing; It's not always about the actual "spoiled" part of the game, it's rather about the feeling of being spoiled parts of the game. People like new, untouched, unexplored stuff. Being spoiled contents of the game can take that away. If I'm aware of a plot twist that is going to occur before it does, then I won't be able to fully immerse myself in that part of the game because I'm/my brain is just waiting/trying to figure out when/how that spoiled part is going to happen.

Of course it's great to be able to freely discuss games without restriction — that's exactly why you can highlight any piece of text in your post and hit the 'spoiler' button above the posting area to hide it from the eyes of those who've yet to enjoy the game. It doesn't even break onto a new line so you can hide just the most sensitive stuff (it should be obvious what kind of things these are).
I'd like to think people on MapCore are smart enough to understand what kind of discussion is going to occur in a thread about a hot new game, what kind of ultra-sensitive stuff should be spoilered, etc. You don't have to go crazy and spoiler every slight detail, but posting major points of storyline is obviously going to upset people.
I understand your point about it being nice not having to worry about spoilers Jetsetlemming, which is why I only outlaw spoilers for games that're fresh — if you're still reading threads and articles about games once they've been out for weeks you're just asking for it. But I think when we're barely 24 hours after the game's online release and it's yet to even come out in Europe for consoles, it's a little too early to deem it a game everyone's played.

i think you're all overselling it (as seem to be the standard around these parts). the new mechanics were frustrating more than fun to play around with
, and i spent way too much time getting pissed off trying to figure out the puzzles
(especially some of the ones in old aperture between the spheres. put some goddamn visual hints so i don't have to sit half an hour trying to figure out just how to move to the next goddamn puzzle)
. wheatley was annoying in the beginning, but gets funnier over time (near the end, he's pretty goddamn funny, though i will say that the accent has much to do with this).
Quotethe way he listed ingredients in one of the puzzles literally made me lol every time i had to retry it
.
writing is still top notch, and apart from the slightly predictive main story, the character development was excellent. visually, the new look gave the game some spice, but didn't really do it for me until
Quotethe salt mine/old aperture science
, which was awesome in both concept and construct.
still a good game, just nowhere near as awesome as the first.
Quote from sarge matAnyone else notice the Super 8 level in the extras. Pretty cool.
yeah, i thought that was awesome. i don't know how the movie will be, but the idea of making an interactive trailer like this is nice. probably one of the few movies ill get to watch this year.
This post just makes me think you are easy to irritate. Every mechanic was clearly introduced and cleverly used.
This game is damn near perfection and is also -the- example for how a sequel should be.

Noooooo dont feed it!

Just finished solo player. Glorious, hilarious, beautifull, well made

but easy and short
(it's not that short but imagine if press write you will have for 8-10 h of portal and you just have half of it) -

Agreein with this

(it's not that short but imagine if press write you will have for 8-10 h of portal and you just have half of it)I took six hours JUST for coop, with SP being longer (both in feeling and how long it took me, started around 4PM the day after playing through coop and finished after midnight). Already partially replayed SP for dev commentary (they've spread out the comment nodes through the whole game, instead of piling them on in one area like their last couple games), and haven't even started looking for the neato hidden stuff that might be valuable, like "Hidden Transmission" or "Lost Experiment".
Not quite the same value I got out of actually multiplayer-focused Valve games like L4D2, but as far as story driven games goes, I can't think of any non-RPG released in the last few years that goes longer than Portal 2's combined campaigns.
-
Took me 9 hours on SP, looking around and figuring out puzzles, and I'm about 2/3rds through Coop after 3 hours in it. Plus I've already spent another 3 hours achievement hunting.
So that means I've already spent more time playing Portal 2 than all my gaming time in 2011 so far, combined. (besides ipod gaming)
-
I've spent more time playing 16-bit games on my PSP than I have playing Portal 2 this week. But then, that's just because those old games are really freakin good.

Finished it. Amazing. I love how it's all about the level design --
Quoteespecially when Wheatley gives you all those crappy levels and then steals someone else's, sooooo meta
-
I finished SP earlier, and just finished co-op in about 4.5hrs with a random German. i think it's the best game valve has ever made, i loved
Quotethe old aperture science spheres
and how even after however many hours it took, it never felt like you were doing the same things over and over.
also, how does co-op with other players work? we checked the hub afterwards, and we both had ticks next to each level, but if you play with someone else, can you only play levels both of you have already completed, or does only one player need to have them unlocked?
-
Cave Johnson here,
Just finished it. Took me 7 hours over several goes.
I'm in space.
I'm not sure what I liked most, the dialogue, music, sounds, lighting, design, pitch black humour...
In space.
And what CJ said, the whole stealing thing was great, gave me a wry smirk - you're a maverick like me, someone over at HR said I couldn't fire a man cause he was in a wheelchair, you know what? I fired him anyway, ramps are expensive.
Space.
The end song was fantastic and the ending sequence in general.I was kind of predicting it, though. Continuous game of the year for 5 years.

All I really want to say is
"I loved it"
All I can really say without writing a novel...

-
Finnished it, says 4.5 hours on my profile page but I guess their server has ben down for a while or someting because I think it took me around 7 hours.
Did some sightseeing as well just to see how they did things and looking at the animations on the screens around the elevators so it wasn't a rush playtrough,
I just had little trouble finnishing the puzzles and never had to give up and try again later with a fresh mind

I think people who did not play the orriginal will have it a little bit tougher.
Humor was great , duration was shorter as I hoped for but the levels look amazing.
Just too bad I can't try out the coop.
I was missing the sound of footsteps, could hear them on glass tough.

Finished it, loved it, want to make maps for it now

-
Btw, did no one notice the obvious IP crossover at the end of SP?
